Automotive Starter Motor

Has anyone considered runing the winding of an automotive starter moter in a series parrallel config. and rotating the can/magnets around the stationary core?  Alignment maybe the most challenging aspect but everything else is almost done for you, and it would be cheap!

Actually, the nice ferrite magnets which are pretty strong do have a nice shape on them that is perfect for induction motor conversions. There are about 4 to 6 magnets per each starter. BUt thats an interesting idea!

Kevin L,
Hi I was just wondering what make and year the starters are that have PM's in them ? All of the ones I've torn apart (84 and older) had EM,s (electro magnets) in them.
From your post above it sounds like you want to make it into something like a ceiling fan type motor. You will need to figure out how to mount the bearings ,if you'll have enough shaft sticking out to mount it, if the shaft is large enough tosuport the weight of the gen and prop, andhow to get the wires out. The ceiling fans use a hollow shaft for this last one.
                                Just a few thoughts

A neighbor who works in a junkyard says they started putting pm starters in most cars somewhere around '94. This is the first I knew about that myself.Norm.

The later model vehicles do have PM starters. I was looking at a 1998 Accord starter. I didn't relieze they were neo's, I just assumed that the were Ceramic. But I guess It wouldn't make much sense to use ceramic as they wouldn't generate enough power to turn the engine. Actually I was thinking of mounting (welding)?? the can with the magnets to the windmill on a car rotor assy so that it rotates with the blades. Then fixing the main shaft of the armature to the center non turning section of the rotor assy (Drill and weld) I could then jumper the commutator sections together to produce higher voltage. The wire used is pretty heavy stuff. Looks line 10 or 8 AWG so I'm not sure what kind if voltage to expect, maybe low. The starter itself has an internal gear drive like 10:1 and the starter bearing are not much to be desired, as the car starter has a pretty short operating time on the car. So the starter in its current form is pretty much junk for wind applications. But the magnets winding and laminates are are there and just waiting to be figured out. I would be interested in what Hugh, Ed, DanB and the others think of this idea. Later Kevin L

Hello, My Families business as I was growing up was an automotive electrical Rebuilding shop. If I remember correctly The what we refered to as (permanent magnet starters) came about between `82&`84. I remember everyone said if you dropped them they were of no use anymore. I just found this forum last night and it sure makes me regret not paying more attention to this subject as a teenager.
