Board Alterations

Stumbled onto a new look on the board today.

I see we now have a built in spell checker and, Les, this one works!

A bit easier to navigate with the shorter intro text and I like the listing of who has commented on which story. Makes it easier to track the user posts you want to read. Another item I noticed was the button to add one of your uploaded files into a comment which had some folks confused on how to do that before.

Bravo, Dan[s] and so far I like it.

Thanks.

Cheers.

problems getting that story posted (none / 0) (#1)

Hey folks;

I had a puppy mother of a time getting that story posted. Finally had to uncheck the spell checker option to get it to take it. It happens that way on comments too you must uncheck that box apparently.

Just an FYI

Cheers.

TomW,

I had the same experience with the spell checker. I could not get the new post to go up until I unchecked it. Could you have a button that automatically cuts it off before posting?

BTW, am I right about this: it seems the spell checker indicates possible misspelled words in Red, but you still have to figure out the correct spelling and make the corrections manually.

And it wouldn't find usage mistakes like these:

"I warrant two happy width the post I just putt up on the bored, butt the spill chick didn't show any problems with watt I rote. Sew I guess at lease I spilled everything write."

Still, all Rusty's hard work is showing. Things are looking better and better. That idea of a New post and comments page would be great!

From the front page, I don't quite understand the sequence of the listing of people who have commented on a particular post. Are they chronological, or according to who responded to someone's comment?

I've also noticed that you have categories listed beside each posting. At least some of those categories are not listed across the top as categories to jump to. One of the problems with having things divided by categories is that everyone must post them to the correct category. Otherwise, you end up having to scroll through every single page to get to a post you haven't yet seen. On the old board, everything (for the last so many months) was in one long listing. I could just scroll. In my case, I have a wheel mouse. That made it very simple and quick.

Like others have mentioned, I like the New in Red, though it would suit me better if it was slightly larger. You had it on the left before the original Subject. It was easy to zero in on posts you wanted to read.

I think one of the things I'm least crazy about is the having to hit the "Next 20" to get to more pages of posts. There may be comments I haven't yet read, but they may be 8 to 12 pages further in.

The spellcheck is a neat feature, though you folks have a rather specialized vocabulary. Hope it allows for a custom dictionary.

I notice one thing - I have what we used to call a tagline for my signature file. I like to have the tagline added right after my message. I usually place my screen name in the message itself. I've tried to insert a blank line, then have the tagline appear. Sometimes it does, and sometimes it doesn't. Any idea of why? I'm set for Auto Format.

You guys are being very responsive to suggestions. I still think Scoop isn't as easy to use as some of the other formats of bulletin boards. But - hey - it's your shop and your board. I'll adapt.

Hey, I'm the guy who's actually doing the coding here. About finding new stuff -- I've got one more task to do which is a handy page that will show you basically everything new since the last time you visited. So rather than paging through the indexes, you can just go there and get it all on one page. I think it's exactly what you want.

You should look for that next week, I believe. I wanted to have it done with the rest of the changes, but it turned out to be a little more complicated than I expected.

Hi Rusty,

Thanks for all the hard work.  The new board is shaping up beautifuly.

When I estimate the time required for a task, I take my best shot at it, then double it and add ten percent.  Comes out amazingly close more often than I would care to admit.

Best Regards,

troy

If you can keep the "new" messages with the thread it started in (like the old board) so you can see what it began as, that would be great. What I mean is, if this page will have only the messages that are new and not what goes with it, I am not sure that would be helpful. As long as they are linked to the original thread it would be fine (that probably goes without saying).

Things are looking good. Keep up the good work!

Great work I like the improvements. Easier to follow, and I'm sure regular participants will appreciate it even more when its environment will be more familiar. I am sure also that we will all like the versatility it offers. One question though, how to add line spacing ? Paragraph ? Regards barnac

Auto Format is how (none / 0) (#12)

Barnac;

Go over here:

http://www.fieldlines.com/interface/comments

Or "Comment Preferences" in the blue box on the right

Set your posting options to "auto format". Be sure to click the save button!

It will magically add links and it will look like you type it. Or it can use html code if you're into that.

Cheers.
