One of lifes mysteries or is it?

Having just finished installing my new solar panels and wishing to monitor (gloat) their output for a while, I removed the wind generator from the shunt and remote metre. Having wired the wind generator direct to the fuse I gave it no further fought.

In a previous post I had asked a question about tracking these panels and decided to simply mount them for now, they are the ones in the rear.

At lunch time I noticed the wind generator going quite fast for such a mild wind, on checking I found it had reversed polarity. How could this be, all I had done was remove the metre, tricked me for a while.

I suspect it has occured because around two weeks ago I advanced the brush assembly on my compound wound old girl. While this had the desirable effect of reducing the demagnetizing effect and charging sooner, I suspect I went too far. Now waiting for a wind challenged day to climb up there and back it off a bit.

Has anybody a better explination?

hello wpowokal,
i read your posting about polarity reversal. i am assuming that you have compound motor connected for self excitation. by moving your brush holder assembly you may have taken it out of the neutral plane a little to much and allowed polarity from either main pole or interpole to have most influence on polarity. by returning brush holder assembly to neutral plane and re-connecting to load, i am sure the problem will self correct.

good luck!!-----zubbly

This can happen if the generator is briefly connected to the battery back-to front (or the pv array back to front).  Try motoring the generator from the battery by bypassing the blocking diode and see if it reverts to the correct polarity now.

Thanks Zubby and Hugh, I have now rotated the brush assembly about 50% towards origional position and motored the old girl briefly and she's flying again.
