I need someone's opinion?

I need your comment please,

Yesterday I put together a mill for some testing. I have a Leeson 2Hp Dc motor and I adapted a 7 1/2 foot by-prop using the fly wheel as the hub. It worked very well and I had no balancing to do. I mounted everything on the boat rack on my four wheeler. The prop would start turning at aroung 10 m/h and the voltage was over twelve volts at 16 to 18 m/h. I was limited in the distance I could go because I was testing in town on the street. I plan to go on a dirt road to test longer distances. Does this sound about right or can I get much better voltage at lower wind speeds? I also noticed when I was going up a small incline the mill really took off. The mill is set up parallel to flat ground. Should it be tilted upward a bit on the tower? Also, is the weight of the fly-wheel working against the mills efficency or is it helping it? Thanks for all your comments.

i personally originally  i thought the flywheel effect was good. I tried it on my first ones but it really doesnt work or help in this situation. Thats just my opinion. JB

hello unclebuck, just read your posting and was wondering what the name plate data was on your 2 hp leeson. i was just given a burnt permanent magnet leeson 1 1/2 hp 180vdc. i have been looking for input as to what the output voltage would be if i was to rewind the armature without modifications. my motor has two permanent magnets.

as far as the increase in speed going up an incline I'm not sure, but just wondering if a pivot devise could be incorporated into the top of the tower in order to trim angle for optimum performance similar to the way a motor boat has a trim device on the motor. just maybe you stumbled onto something here.

good luck-------zubbly

I salvaged this motor from an old treadmill and I don't think it is an idustrial version like yours. The output shaft is only 1/2 or 9/16. The horse power is not rated on the name plate but a friend told me it was 2Hp.

I hope this helps you out somewhat and if anyone is able to share what these abreviations all mean I'd like to know Thanks.

I wonder what "treadmill" duty means. I see that they don't actually give a duty cycle. The reason I ask is that 90v x 14.4 amps gives 1296 watts or 1.737 horsepower. That implies that 2HP is a slight overload for continuous output. It's not a concern for this application, since the limit is the amperage the winding can take (14.4 a, regardless of voltage).
A used treadmill (or industrial DC) motor is high on my scroungers list.

The Leeson motors I've used here are model C42D340T7A.  They
are also treadmill motors, with a 5/8" shaft sticking out each end.
The voltage, RPM and current are the same as yours, and since these
are rated at 2 hp, yours most likely are the same.
I use a six foot two-blade prop on these and they do pretty well.  They
have huge brushes and heavy windings, but they need to spin to
around 600 RPM or better to really produce.  You can see one of mine on my
web site.
These big DC motors are an easy way to build a strong, simple genny.
Due to the RPM, they don't produce all that well in low winds, but when
the wind picks up they do pretty well.  I see 20 amp peaks from mine
fairly often in windy weather.

when charging batteries with a motor like this do you have some way of controlling the charging rate? or is 10 and 20 amps even an issue?

Unless you're charging a pair of AA nicads, I can't imagine why
anyone would need to control the charging rate...  the idea is to
generate power, and if you're making too much power, you don't
have enough batteries.
Even a cheap car battery will take 20 amps just fine.  The only
trouble comes when it's fully charged, at which time you switch it
it a dump load.  That's what charge controllers are for.
I have three gennies flying, ranging from 12 to 45 amps, plus
two banks of solar panels all feeding a single rejuvinated lift truck
battery.  It's rare to see all the sources peak at the same instant,
but I have seen over 75 amps momentarily on the meter.  That's
about half of what the original battery charger put out.
