surge protection/deep cycle batts?

Does a battery bank provide any surge protection?

The electricity around here flickers on and off about every week. Solid state devices in general and computers in particular, don't like all that voltage fluctuation.  That's one of the reasons I make some of my own electricity.  We charge our laptops from the battery bank, rarely from the grid.

So here's the question, if my laptop is plugged into the battery bank, and the battery bank is being charged by the grid because it's been cloudy for a month, does the battery bank offer some protection from spikes and surges? I do run the charger from a surge protector, but I want to know if that is overkill.

This board has some of the best minds in the country, and I can't wait to hear the opinions as I am stumped.

Best Regards,

troy

Troy, In my opinion the simple answer is yes and it never hurts to run off surge protectors.

The longer answer, if the charger is a simple transformer and rectifier then a mains spike (voltage increase) will be passed through.
If it is a regulated charger then the regulator should take care of it.

The size of the battery bank and charger will slightly influence the surge absorbing ability. Think of it this way, fill a bath with water, put your hand in and make waves. Now go out into a big lake/ocean and make waves.

I agree, I would create huge spikes when electrically engaging my hydro , large enough to blow up car head lights , but when first fed into A single car battery, I could read no major fluctuation at all. It worked like a great big shock absorber. Jungle Bill
