Wiring up the 3 phase stator

more fun with DanCad!

In the last couple windmills I made I took lots of pictures but never made things very clear about exactly how they are wired up.

In response to Paulpics posting, and lots of email about how to wire up the 3phase stator where we have 12 magnets, and 9 coils I made these drawings.

Each coil is numbered - and colored, according to which phase it's in.  Each coil has a "start" - which is the inside, and an "end" which is the outside.  The "starts" are labeled A, B, and C, and the "ends" X, Y, and Z.

So we have the choice to wire the stator into Delta, for lower voltage and lower resistance... and higher current, or Star for the opposite.  The windturbines I made recently are all wired in Delta and the picture above shows the connections.  Then we can either use 6 diodes, or 2 bridge rectifiers to rectify the 3 phase alternating current into direct current which we hook to batteries for charging.  In practice - I actually use 4, or 6 35 amp bridge rectifiers - hooking them into parallel to simply increase the current rating since two are not enough to handle the output of these wind turbines. Click Here to visit Ed's 3 phase basics page for a better description about how, and why!

thanks everybody for trying to help, but what i want to know is still a question to me.8 magnets 24 coils wrapped clockwise do they hook end end, start start, end end ect. or is it end start, end start. trying not to be apain here just missing something.thanks outback

VERY helpful (as usual)!
do have a ? tho:
have been seeing a great deal of mention in your posts about use of 2 or more strands of small diameter wire instead of a single strand of larger wire in your coils..been trying to envision HOW ya do dat!
My tiny brain ain't graspin' the mechanics of actually winding coils that way, tho the advantages seem obvious.
I recently (at last) raised my dual rotor, dual helix driven machine; will post some further info when weather and availability of help allows me to correct my own tower engineering error that is preventing coupling the helix to the genny.....fun.
thanx

Still confused on real 3 phase..... (3.00 / 0) (#9)

I still beleive that real 3 phase is when a magnet energizes 3 coils at different
times.

If not a 24 coil stator could produce 24 phase power??

check that website it seems to be a correct theory.
I remember a long time ago i asked the question, why is the neutral wire the same size as the other phases?? why does it not burn carrying 3 times the current?

The answer i was given is because the timing is different for every phase, thus
supporting the 3 coil per magnet theory.

just my 2 cents...not trying to make an argument,...just trying to learn..

Great pictures Dan. That clears up a lot of questions.

They say a picture's worth a thousand words, but these pictures are 10,000 worders.  Thanks.

Thanks guys,

DanCad rules!  I have a feeling this page is going to get referenced a lot...

Keep having fun!

troy

ps, are you guys quietly plotting to produce an FAQ with DanCad illustrations??? This one would be a must have.

Hope so,

tr

Dan;

Got a copy of that CAD program ??

Looks like a good one!

Cheers.

You can get them at Toys R Us....
yellow boxes that say "crayola" on them.   (crayon aided design) Its the most advanced CAD system I've ever had the patience to try :-)
