Two wind turbines up and flying

A picture and a "little" info.

Both turbines are downwind types and have the same 12 2x1x1/5 inch magnets in on the rotor. However, as you can see they're made a little different. The closest one in the picture has a 10 foot rotor made from 1.5"x5.5" pine boards. I have no idea what the tpr is, but it's fast I think, the angle at the tip is about 2-3 degrees and at the base it's as much angle as you can get from the board dimensions. The other turbine has an 8 foot rotor also made from 1.5"x5.5" pine boards, but I glued about a 12-18" length of the same board to the back where I put in a much deeper scoop near the hub. Also, there's more angle all the way to the tip, which is 4-5 degrees. The 10 footer is only about 15 feet off the ground, the 8 footer is about 30. The 8 footer, even though it puts a lot more force on the turning contact points in the main pipe turns in the wind much better. The wind's leverage advantage is much bigger than the turning points frictional disadvantage. The 10 footer is WAY louder than the 8 footer because the blade turns so close to the vane. It was quiet like the 8 footer before I put the vane on it. Both are laminate machines, both start up in about 7mph winds and make a little power in 10mph winds. However, the 10 footer does way better all the time in it's output mostly because of the stator, which is designed for much higher voltage(129vac at 800-1000rpms vs 36vac at 800-1000rpms, when both are hooked in star). I only have 14/3 romex going to each so when I put much load on the 8 footer the voltage drops to almost nothing. The 10 footer puts out maybe 1000watts max. The 8 footer delivers maybe 1/4 the output to the house, but it does have about 50 more feet of romex(300 vs 250). Currently I plan to make the 10 footer look more like the 8 footer and speed it up by cutting down the rotor a little. The 8 footer will get a new stator, higher voltage than the other(60-70 turns vs 50), but the same 3-phase, 18 coil, 18ga. specifications. The 8 footer currently is a 3-phase, 9 coil, 14ga of 32 turns stator. Both seem to start up as well, but the 8 footer spins faster of course. If I left out anything someone let me know. ;-)

Looks like you covered it pretty well, Great work Kevin!  Does the tail vane help any?  Mine was quite slow in turning when the wind changed so I ended up adding a vane on mine also a year or so ago.  Seems to help somewhat but it doesn't seek the wind imediately, I'm used to watching the upwind units and when the wind changes, even slightly, they find the wind quickly.  I'm sure some of this is from the gyro effect, even in higher winds it doesn't move imediatly.

Have Fun!

Thanks Ed. The vain helped a lot on both, but more so on the 8 footer. The 8 footer turns/yaws slower than the 10 footer and it's smoother because it's turning on a much bigger radius. The 8 footer also turns better in large changes in wind direction. I've already seen the 8 footer yaw several times before the rotor starts turning, this rarely happens with the 10 footer. The leverage gained by moving the turbine and vain further out really helps it yaw a lot better.

Has anyone ever had a variable distance coil from the magnets?
That is the faster the unit turns the closer the magnets get to the coils.
That way it will start up easier and the design would not have to be compromised.
