Question for DanB 48V ??

I was just wondering...

And maybe some others on the board are also... I just wanted to know what came of the stator your friend made for 48V?? I think it was mentioned in one of your earlier posts so Im assuming it was a brake disc design. I was just wondering because a friend of mine just loaned me a 24V Xantrex inverter (a step up from my 12V system) and I want to build a 24V machine. I also will be building a 48V machine as well for a friend in upstate NY. I was wondering if you knew any details... was it 3 phase?? how many windings in each coil ?? also what AWG wire he used... Im assuming 16AWG but it might have been bigger. Dan, the mags I just bought from you will be used in the 48V machine, so this might turn out to be a very powerful alternator. Im still crunching numbers but I will keep you guys posted on the progress. The last machine I built used the same mags as you used in the triplets. The stator was wound 3 phase- 9 coils with 85 turns of 16AWG each(I wasnt sure if it would be for 12 or 24V depending on how it came out). Wired in star, I hit 60V spinning by hand..resistance was quite high though. I just wired it in delta and i have been running it on a 12V system and have seen 60A after a 250' run to the house (it hasnt melted down yet hehehe). It kinda gives me an idea of where to start on the 48V stator... just wanted to share ideas. :-) Have Fun!!!! RoyR

Hi Roy -
The fellow who we built that machine for has been away for a while working, so we've yet to raise it.
It's basicly identical to the "triplets" - 3 phase, the only dif. being that it is for 48 volts, and rather than being wired in Delta, it's wired in Star.  Normally - if we wanted a 24 volt machine instead of 12 we simply use finer wire (roughly I think we can go up 3 numbers in size, so instead of 14 wed try 17, or for 48 volts wed use 20) - but in this case we changed it to star.  The triplets also tended to run slow (stall the blades some) - which can be adjusted with either resistance in the line or by opening the airgap.  For Adams 48 volt machine I was shooting for a higher cutin speed.  Rather than cutting in at 110 rpm like the 12 volt ones we made it came out more like 140 rpm.
Basicly, the stator is made from AWG 17 wire, each coil has 140 turns.  (funny how the # of turns matches the cutin rpm...).  the origional posting about it is here:
