Scavengers sources dream list

To all who re-use. What are, in your opinions, the best sources for magnets, wire, electronics, prop wood, metal tubes, etc...
Kind of "The scavengers sources dream list"

I've seen in the mailing list :

-computer power supply (4) for ~13.75v up to 25A regulated power
-computer power supply fan (when the electronic is junk)
-3 1/2" hard disks for magnets
-microwaves for magnets and parts
-bicycle parts, gear and chains
-vacuum cleaner motor for wire
-car parts for the spindles and disks/drums

What else do you guys re-use? Anything as cool for other reasons?

Sections of pipe for towers from the scape yard and construction/demolition sites.
old motors from the junk yard, convience center, industrial washer & dryer company, and rewind shop.
Scrap aluminium sheet metal from various electronics surplus.
New honking huge 125 AH Lucent Batterys from the hamfest (50.00) each.
Wire rope from from a client who no longer needs it.
hook up wire from old arcade machines.
Bearings and shafts from a racing game arcade machine.
old UPS back up supplys that make dandy inverters.

Parameter;

Nothing to do with you or this story itself, specifically but I couldn't resist:

As well as recycling  most everything else i use for projects, I can come here every day and see a whole list of old, used and  recycled stories posted by folks apparently unable  to do a simple search which makes this a top of the list recycling center for questions.

Oh, and I personally do a lot of side trading with members of this board and the folks over on IRC. One Mans junk is another mans treasure.

Cheers.

Well, I tought I could be pointed to sources I have'nt read of in here yet. I've been roaming around the pages much for quite awhile to my great delight.

A list will be compiled and diffused on my site, I mean really creative recyclings. Like the car parts for the windmills. I easily see the obvious oportunities, so we shall not dwell on this.

I work in a large (for my town) 18 story office building.  There is always some kind of refurbishment or construction going on.  One place where people congregate to smoke is the loading dock on the back side of the building.  This area is also where the trash dumpsters are placed to accept the refuse from interior renovations, so I keep an eye on the dumpster.  I have salvaged CAT-5 cable and plywood that I could use.  I have passed on some things that I would like to have salvaged simply because I have learned that just because I could do something with the stuff doesn't mean I necessarily would get around to doing something with it.  Other things that I have seen thrown out -- and useful parts associated with them:

1" electrical conduit from partition walls that were demolished:  I think that 1 foot sections of this would make good rollers for out-feed supports for shop tools if the ends were plugged with a short piece of dowel.  The rest of the support could be constructed of this material, as well.  Hmmmmmm...I better pick some up.

Computers, usually stripped of every part, but not infrequently whole.  Computer cases, sometimes individually, sometimes a dozen or more.

"Broken" office furniture, often chairs.  They may not be functional for sitting, but they certainly have a bunch of parts (wheels, adjustments, interlocking sliding tubes, etc.)

Pallets.

I missed out on a large sheet of 1/4 inch glass (the kind used for covering desks and conference tables) that had been cracked.  The piece could have been cut into smaller pieces.  I had no way to transport it.

Carpet squares and carpet scraps that could be used for padding things.

Sections of steel wall studs.  They have been cut out of partition walls, and are no longer "standard" lengths, but could be used for other purposes.

"Old" office furniture that is not even broken.

As far as I know, this stuff just gets hauled off and buried in a landfill.
