The lowest depth I can get is around 14 inches (lots of rock), should I bury the cable from the Wind Turbine tower or put it in some kind of flexible conduit.

I have an Ametek 30, producing about 6 amps on a good day.  Its about 60 feet from the Battery bank, I have some 12 AWG (guage) heavy duty outdoor electrical cable (3 strand).

Thoughts?

Thanks,

Rob

Rob;

Yes and yes. From experience in rocky ground I say bury it in conduit or drainage tile.

14 inches is kind of shallow but I don't like exposed runs above ground they are prone to damage from all kinds of things like falling trees, whipping winds, ice or  operator error while running equipment, etc.

Just my opinion. Either will likely work.

Cheers.

Thanks to all for your input!  They are all good options, might look into some flexible drainage tile.

we bury cable up north [north slope] all the time ..
just throw some sand down first and compact it ..then toss in your cable and throw
some more sand on top .. compact again. then toss in what you took out, overfill
somewhat because it will have a depresion after a while.....

Well I think myself I would just run the wire as is over head.

I have heavy household outdoor wire, the grayish type meant to be burried, it has been hanging from the trees for about 8-9yrs now and is just fine. I think this is a 12/3 if I remeber correctly. Most likely the same thing you have.

My power pole is about 100' away from the first trailerhouse I had here and this cable in the trees ran from that pole to the shed by the house. I then went from an outlet in the shed to other stuff like the trailerhouse and a tree on the other side where I had a 4'X 4'x8' box I raised day old chicks in as a brooder till ready to be moved to the normal pen. This cable as I say is still working just fine tossed up in the trees over head. I don't do much down there now, but when I do and need power this is what I use for 120VAC to the trailer house still. Basically it's just a long extension cord and I never have ran much off it other than lights, vacume cleaners, stereo, saws, drills, ect... All low amp stuff only a few things at a time, and I never have problems, even when we lived in the trailer and used it this way.

As for burring a cable 18" deep, if you do that I would use some type of conduit or even plain PVC pipe at least. 18" is not very deep and it would be very easy to hit in the future if your doing any digging or driving any posts in that area later. Also rocks might cut through a bare cable as the ground shifts durring season changes.

nothing to lose

Spelin and tpying are my strong points, not electronics.

Rob,
I like the black polyethelene water pipe for underground wiring. It is available in long lengths (rolls), is fairly flexible, and is easy to pull wire into.

I like Burial cable for a couple of reasons.

(1) It's not up there like an antenna encase you happen to be prone to lightning.

(2) It looks better than a lot of overhead wires running all over the place.

Also if you happen to have moles or gophers, conduit is a must. I'm with "Electric Ed" on this one, I really like the polyethylene water pipe. I just use a vacuum cleaner to pull a small piece of plastic through it which is tied to a fishing line. After I get that threaded through it, then I use the fishing line to pull small twine or rope and use the twine or rope to pull my wires through. You can replace or add wires even if the ground is frozen.

I used this method to get network cables through a conduit one time, too.

Works vary good!

It's a great trick - I discovered it out of desperation after I forgot to put a pull string in a really gnarly run of pipe.  I found that a half decent shop vac can pull twine directly if you feed the twine in carefully.

You can also blow a rat in the pipe . Greenlee makes a vacuum especially for that chore .   they sell foam rats to blow or suck in . A regular  task  in site work.  the pulls are 1000s of feet in 100 to 150' sub pulls . Jet line in behind the rat . It's good to put some pressure on one end and vacuumed on the other to get the water out.
make sure you use pvc or ridged pipe with the coupling air tight . a good way to make a rat is to take urethane foam and make small ball with a tail and wrap it with plastic and tie on well and tape it so ti won't snag

I know this sound like a Know it all but this works real fine and lastsa long time and with 1" pipe in the ground you'll have a lot of flexability.
