Can I measure amperes with a milliammeter ?

I have a milliammeter that has 5 milliampers at the end of the scale.
Is thare anything I can do to be able to measure 1-5 amperes ?
Can I put a resitor in parallel ? or something like that ? ...

Search for shunt. They have several up to 600A. I buy from them routinely, so far no problems.
