Taking the Biggs an Stratt to the next level

Here are some pics of a home brew electric start 5HP

Had some time to play today  :  )

So I did a quick  lash up of a Briggs powered battery charger with electric start.

The generator / starter is a ½ HP PM motor  the engine is a 5HP
I am using a car solenoid and a key switch to power the motor to start the engine
It spins it over and starts the engine nicely   :  )

I still need to add a blocking diode
to keep the motor from draining the battery  when the engine is shut off. I am thinking it should be able to put out  25 to 30 amps. But haven't put a load to it yet.

I am waiting for some parts for a simple dump load charge controller
instead of turning on a load when battery is charged .
The relay contacts will be for the engine kill switch .

Then on to the next stage adding a PLC to automate the starting of the  engine based  on battery state of charge. What FUN :  )

very cool cant wait to here more test results I have been thinking of trying similar
with a 2 hp 2 cycle tec from snowblower and a ecm motor  I wonder if if this type setup will put out full voltage output with load or pull down to battery voltage
and rise with charge i hope this is the case than a charge controller such as mikes
controller schould do niceley.  But if motor puts out full voltage output like a car alt this wont work and am still looking for a way to controll anybody got a good idea
for this problem I think though that the secound senereo will pervail sence the engin will have  alot more tork than the wind  lust my 2 cents   george

I note the nameplate rating on the genny - it is rated for 12vdc @ 1750 rpm.  Even with a 14.4 output for charging batts., your Briggs will be running at only 2100 rpm.  This is far below the speed at which it develops significant power; most small engines are rated @ 3600 rpm.  I suggest a 2:1 vbelt step up instead of your very neat direct drive for a much more satisfying result.    K3CZ

The motor is also far, far, too small too need the full 5hp. The full output is not needed, and the engine will last ALOT longer at less than 3600 RPMs.

Excuse my ignorance but i thought it needs a sophisticated setup to drive a DC PM motor. By that i mean a panel to pulse the coils or does this thing have brushes to the feed the coils in the rotor?

You will only need  a controller if you are going to vary  the motor speed .
If not rated voltage in will give rated rpm out .

Oh yes I know the motor is to small for the engine but I had it on hand At 3600 rpm I getting around 18 volts.
I want to get  something  running so I could try automating the system .
Mikes charge controller or the one in Hughes plans will work for the engine kill switch.
There just a fancy version  of the voltage sensing  relay that the old 32 volt Delco light plants used to stop the engine when the battery bank was charged.

For full automation starting and stopping I am programming a PIC based PLC.
What I have so far works on the simulator  and is only 12 lines long.
I mite have to add a servo for the choke but that shouldn't  be to bad.
I have programmed in ladder but this is my first try at basic.
Very interesting  an a whole lot of fun.

Old F,
Hmmm, I have a 12V, 70A, 700RPM PM motor from a oil truck hose reel. Now I know what I will use it for! This looks great, good job.

Some of the newer B&S carbs have an automatic choke made much like automotive ones except the scroll spring is tiny. As much as I hate them this may be a good application for one. A solenoid activated primer bulb may be worth a thought as well.

I also wonder if an old automotive voltage regulator could be used for your starter circuit.
The mechanical ones you could adjust, just use the field control part of it. I think it would close your starter relay at a preset voltage and release it as soon as it sensed the voltage increase when the B&S comes up to speed. It wouldn't close again until your battery voltage dropped to whatever voltage you set. Just throwing out some thoughts. I'm having fun too

This is what I have just done.  Starter motor interfaced to Briggs 6HP.
