Angle grinder to cut rotor

Or pay for lathe ?

I'm doing an induction motor coversion. I need to get the rotor cut down to glue on the magnets. The magnets are no more than a quarter of an inch thick. I don't have a lathe to cut the rotor. Do you think I can cut down the area for the magnets with an angle grinder and leave the rotor alone where no magnet is mounted? I'm putting on 4 magnets evenly spaced.

Im not entirely sure about this answer, but i have built a couple 'fine' knives (more like shiny, bear-sized k-bar/katana) and i had nothing but grinders to use for cutting.

In my knive making experiance it produces a cheap blade due to temperatures inflicted on the metal. However, if you can keep the shaft cold; i think it would work as well as you can. (if you are carefull and patient it should turn out well)

Actually... i used a acet. torch to pierce the hand guard as well.

  Hope the pic works.

Hi Paul,

It would probably be easier, quicker and less messy to just cut 4 flats on the rotor with a hacksaw and clean up with a file. The metal laminations on the rotor are usually fairly soft and should be easy to cut. I'm assuming that your going to use flat rectangular magnets.
