Briggs automation  up date

Stage one complete  Its alive!  : )

I have it key starting and manual charging

The  ½ HP 12 volt pm motor is rated at 1750 rpm and 39 amp continues .
At 2500 rpm I am getting 15 amps at 13.9 volts in to a close to fully charged battery .

For a short time I ran it up to 2900 rpm and was getting 16 volt at 30 amps.
Not to bad for an odd ball collection  of junk I had laying around  :  )

Stage two will be getting a proper frame welded up an start looking for a 1 to 2hp pm motor for a better match for the 5 HP Briggs
And wait for the parts I have ordered for the dump load charge controller I will use as the engine kill switch. An latter as an input for a PLC

Stage three will be setting up the PLC to set the choke and start the engine when the batteries are low.
It will have a fail safe if  after three failed start attempts
It will sound an alarm and shut down in till its reset.

Have so much fun it should be illegal

So much fun should be made illegal or at least taxed accordingly.

Very cool,

I kept checking your last post to see if you had updated it. I have been wanting to do what you are doing for quite a while. I can't wait to hear how the automation process goes. Let us know right a way.

Hey I have an idea though, those brigs engines will last a lot longer if you don't run them at top speed. I have been thinking about a way of automatically controlling the engine speed, so that the charging rate would remain constant (ie. if, while running the engine, you also put load on the batteries, it would speed up to keep up the optimum charging rate, and slow down when the load is removed, to prevent it charging 2 fast. Every though of this? Your engine should last a lot longer if it's only going as fast as it needs to.

Anyway,
Good luck with this project,
Keep having fun,
Cheers,
Stephen.

Hi Stephen

My biggest problem with this project is time so it will most likely go in fits an starts.
But when I am far enough along I will put my findings in a diary or on my web  page.
The biggest problem with small Briggs engines is not really the speed  but poor lubrication .
They need an oil change every 24 hours of operation If you could  increase the oil capacity or find a way to filter it when its running. They would hold up a lot longer.

If your not haveing fun your doing somthing wrong : )

Most of these small Briggs engines have 2 drain plugs, and 2 filler plugs.  Screw a hose into one drain plug, run it through a small belt drive pump, through a filter, and back into one of the fill plugs.  Depending on the pump, you might even be able to make a right angle, when the filtered oil re-enters the engine, so the oil shoots up twords the piston.  Just put a pulley behind your dove connector to run the oil pump.  Should be able to rig up an old car oil pump to be belt driven.

Just a thought
Brian

Spot on RedLance. That is just what we need to do. My 5hp Brigs engine has, as you say 2 filler plugs, and atleast one drain plug. I will look into getting a used automotive oil pump, and beltdrive is along with my alternator. Who knows, since it does not need to be a very high capacity pump, a small 12v electric one might work just fine.

That way the durability of the engine should increase greatly.

Cheers,
Stephen.
