My motor is not what I thought

I thought I had a 3ph 1/3 hp motor for conversion but a closer look shows I have a 1/8 hp , 1 ph motor. Is this still worth converting? I have to thank all  who gave me information for a motor on this message board which I didn't have. So now I'll start again collecting info for this one. I took a couple good photos this morning. What do you guys think ? (It's for a windmill, Blades 48inches)

Three amps is 36 watts at 12 volts, 72 watts at 24.  You probably don't want to run it significantly higher than the rated current.  You might do better by rewinding it - with more poles and heavier wire.

I wouldn't bother, unless I was REALLY bored and wanted a toy mill.

Lets concider this motors rateing. 3 amps at 115 volts.

3 X 115 = 345 watts. This does not take imnto acount the start windings. they will contribute another 50% or 172.50 watts for a total of 517.50 watts.

This is thoretical. In reality power will be less. The motor would have to be turning at name plate rpm with very dstrong NEOs with a very thin gap.

But the 4 run windings are wired in siries. They are each a 28.75 volt each at 3 amps. If we perelell these 4 coils the voltage would still be 28.75 but the amperage would be 12 amps. If you could expect less amperage do to less rpm lets say 6 amps and ad the 3 amps from the start windings things look a littel better.

9 amps at 12 volts or 108 watts is certanly fesable and posable.

If I can get 650 watts from a 1 hp conversion it makes sence that a 1/8 hp could do 1/8 of that or 81.25 watts. This is at 30 mph.

This same 1 hp conversion does 63 watts at 5 mph this equals 7.87 watts.
There again on target for the 5 watts needed.

Thanks, Jerry.  I hadn't considered cutting and paralleling the poles' windings.

Is it just the picture or are some of the windings a bit toasted? It looks to me like it got a bit too hot at some time.

Hi Paul,

If it was me I'd go for it! If you can do as Jerry suggests and connect the four sets of coils in parallel then you will get some useful power out of it. I've just done a similar sized conversion which I have not finished testing yet but at 450 rpm it will put 9 amps into a 12 volt battery. I can't drive it any faster at the moment due to the lathe motor getting extremely hot! The converted motor itself does not even get warm when putting out the 9 amps. I did rewind mine for three phase as the original single phase windings had overheated and burnt.

Looking at the pictures you posted it looks as though each of the 4 coils in the main windings span 10 stator slots which suggest that the total number of stator slots may be 40? If so, you would not be able to rewind it for three phase as 40 is not divisible by three. You could rewind it to give an even number of phases though and rectify each phase separately. Even if it did not turn out to be a 100% success it would be good practice for something bigger and fun as well!
