almost done now ! need some tail advice

16' machine is almost done, I still need to make a tail

Our machine is almost ready to go, the blades have been fibreglassed (see my latest diary entry, now we still need to make a tail and then put the whole thing together.

I was wondering if there is any rule of thumb that I can follow by picking an iniital tail size ? The machine has a 16' prop, variable pitch and will sit 60' above the ground. Windspeeds here vary wildly, directions too (pretty 'gusty' winds). I'd like the machine to move nice & slow, but I don't have the time anymore to do any fancy yaw braking schemes before the winter will set in so for now we'll go with a passive tail. I intend to make the tail adjustable in distance from the 'hub center' but I would need to know at least what the approximate correct distance should be.

I'm wondering: how large should the tail be (surface area) ? how far away from the center of the hub ? Does the shape matter ? What material should I use ?

Generally the tail length is about same as blade radius but a little longer is not a bad thing.  Perhaps about 10 ft for a 16ft rotor.

To steer it I should think about 4 sq ft would be adequate, but if you want to shut it down by turning it out of the wind you will need much bigger, probably nearer 15 sq ft.

Most people seem to use plywood, but in your case you don't need the weight and you could use something lighter.  Aluminium sheet works but you need to fold the top and bottom edge to give stiffness and fit several damping stays to prevent vibration that will cause cracking.
