could help startup

The recent tsr posr got me thinking again about low speed startup vs. high speed performance. As we know a high tsr rotor will incorporate a lower angle of atack across the full length of the blade, unfortunately this puts the blade in a deep stall condition at low actual tsr's. I'm curious what others may think about incorporating leading edge slats to help remedy this without sacrificing high speed performance to the extent a pitch modification would.

Leading edge slats would certainly do what you want, and with a little careful design you could use centre-of-pressure shift to extend or withdraw them.  

The problem is one I discovered when I tried to buy an aeroplane with leading edge slats.  They're mechanically complicated (and so expensive).  I'd guess that variable pitch would be more cost-effective if you are going to go to that level of complication.

I thought about the deployment issue and other than pressure deployment it would be too complicated to use on a small diameter rotor. Even pressure deployed slats would be if not too complicated, too combersome. my only solution would be to go with something more like slots (permenantly "deployed" slats). I mentioned slats though because I thought more people might recognize what they are. I don't like variable pitch because of it's complexity and weight. It's not that variable pitch is technically challenging, it just adds alot of extra junk and it's hard to get it to pitch at the right time. I also don't think it would be as effective for aiding startup. Thanks for the comments.

I think your logic is sound.  Properly angled slats/slots can increase the stall alpha by a significant margin, and it may not necessarily hurt the "cruise" performance very much.  Give it a shot; run some graphs!  I'm interested in seeing how the comparisons turn out.
