Sorry Tom but I don't know how to get that diagram from where it is the were Paul would like to see it. Here on the board?

Thanks for helping this pest. I'll discribe the circut aftrer its posted.

 Thanks Tom W.

Jerry, sorry to know you think of me as a pest. You seem to have the most experience with different motor conversions so I'm asking you many questions.I'm very interested in this wind generator idea after dreaming of a solar system for my house then realizing it's too expensive.I have worked in electronics all my life and love tinkering. I don't have a machine shop so some things are difficult for me to do when motor converting. I'm going to stick with this project untill I get it right. Maybe I should be asking others for help if I'm bugging you..

Paul.

Paulm;

I DO NOT think Jerry was referring to you as the pest but to himself! Seriously. He is far to nice a guy to start calling people names, of that I am certain.

Cheers.

Paul you've missunderstood my post. I was not calling you a pest. I would not do that.

I thourowly enjoy helping you and anyone else I can.

I was opolgizing to Tom W for me being a pest. This is my  schimatic and Tom W has it on his web page.

I'm very computer chalenged and many times I've asked for Toms help. Tom has been great about helping me and others.

I felt I was being a PEST by asking Tom to do my work one more time.

Sometimes there are sore fellings generated on this board. I don't want to be a part of that.

This board has been so good to me and I owe any and all help I can give to anyone here.

I injoy helping as much as posable. I very sorry if I've ofended you.

I gues my litterary and communication skills are as weak as my computer skills.

Please  keep asking those ?s. I have a pasion for motor conversion and I wish to share that with you as well as everyone.

I'm glad to hear that I misunderstood things because you guys are a gold mine of information. I sometimes like to carry conversations off the message board (as I did with Jerry) to get more detailed with a one on one discussion. I find it easier to explain to one person rather than waiting for a response from a variety of people.
So, is that diagram supposed to represent my 1PH 1/8HP 1725RPM motor with the start winding ?

Hi Paul

Most 120 volt single phase any hp motor is set up that way.

I could have pelelled all of the run windings but to reach cut in speed the rpm would have to be double. Thats ok if you have that rpm. But thats hard to get at lower wind speeds.

Although all perelell would produce the highest amperage. Thats the way the 1 hp Garbogen was wired and at 45 mph it hit 1200 watts but the lower wind speeds sufered.

You find the right combonation of wind speed , blade, voltage, power needed , ect, motor size and the right coil configuration to match all these things.

Thats why there is not one just right wireing scheam. You optimize for each conversion and aplication.

Do the small start windings have half the voltage of the large?  If so, fine, if not you've got an electric brake.

You can check by spinning it up on the bench to some repeatable speed and then measuring how long it takes to coast to a stop with no load, then disconnecting the small windings and doing it again.

If it coasts significantly longer with the windings disconnected from each other, you can still get power from them.  Just use a third bridge for the small ones, rather than hanging them across the large ones.

Hi Underground

Good point. I've checked the voltage output of the small windings against the large windings and it apears to be exactly 1/2.

This was done while the pma/motor was in the lathe at 500 rpm.

Sounds good.

I'd still do the "brake check" though.  Just out of paranoia.  If the drag is present but very small it would also be OK - since under enough load to charge batteries the dumped energy would be going into the battery and the heating in the coils would be just what you'd expect from charging.

(I guess an underground lightning rod would be more useful than an ungrounded one.  No protection, of course.  But much less likely to draw lightning and set the house on fire.  B-)  )
