12V gen charging 24 V battery?

I have been trying to keep up with the on going work on pulse charging and transmission.

I may be wrong but with what I am seeing you can charge all most any battery bank with any
generator.
 I mean a 12 volte generator could charge a 24 volte battery bank so long as the pulse
voltage is higher than that of  the battery. If this is true we mite have to start thinking in watt hr
instead of  amp hr for are battery banks .This could open up all kinds of interesting combination.

Hi Old F,
let You try to use pulse-width modulated charger. An electrical diagram is below.

It is pulse-width modulated charger with 3x AC voltage multiplier. You can charge
24 V battery when Your generator produce 8.5V AC.
It is suitable to charhe 12V battery at low wind. You need to adjust start-up voltage using potenciometer R4. For 12V battery start-up voltage on C7 have to be 13.2V, for 24V it have to be 25.2V. I use this one to charge 24V 240 Ah battery since 2002 and it works perfect.

I have been playing around with designing a hybrid-electric vehicle.  I'm leaning towards it being a 72V system.  Keeping the system charged is the hard part for me.  I'm a software guy, and know little about electronics.  I can read the schematic above, but don't understand it.  Since there are diodes near where a/b/c are hooked up, I'm assuming this schematic is for an AC -> DC converter.  Here are my questions: 1. If I used a 30V DC generator instead of the AC one, would this still work (I know the left 1/4th of the schematic pretty much disappears)?  2. Must anything be adjusted to build it so that it will be able to handle 9000 Watts?  I also have other questions regarding controlling my 'charger', but wanted to be sure I could get the voltage right first.  BTW, for six batteries, I think I would like an output of 86.4 volts, or a 2.88 step-up from the 30V.  Thanks.

Old F, you are absolutely correct in your thinking.

You only need to bring the capacitor up to a high enough voltage above your receiving battery to pass a current pulse. How high just depends on the requirements of your pulse-switch device. For mechanical switching, you only need about 3v or so above battery. For solid-state it needs to be a little higher, like 5-10v above battery.

All you need is one decent sized capacitive charger to feed your battery bank. Then just route all your alternate power sources to feed the capacitors in the most efficient way possible for each source.
