Options for a battery shunt...

Hi Folks.

I am fiddling with a large diameter axial design alternator to be hooked up to a rather large Savonius rotor (eventually).

I am going with a Savonius design since I live in an area with lots of treelines that separate farm fields, so there's lots of swirl... and lots of GUSTS.

My concern is that with small increase in windspeed, I may get a surge of power that could spike quite high on me.  The large diameter of the magnet rotor means that there will be a much higher magnet travel speed for each additional RPM (I think...) so I am concerned that I damage batteries.

Could I get some ideas on shunt options?  How do I sense when the batteries are full, and then, and ONLY then send the excess power off to heat water or light up some light bulbs or whatever...

Thanks in advance.

I have the same problem (wind turbulence) and was considering the use of a Savonius with a fairly heavy flywheel, to help damp out speed fluctuations.

I've actually considered using the 30 inch diameter flywheel as the rotor, with the magnets mounted directly onto it.

It would be housed in the base of my tower, out of the weather. (The satellite dish would have to go.)
