Hi All,

Well, I found a discarded GE ECM motor model 5SME39HG 1/2HP 230V 60 HZ single phase continus duty 4 amps. I hooked it up to a Fluke DMM and tested the pairs of big wires coming out. There are 5 wires but 3 seem to be only ones making power. With a slight spin, well under 100 RPM, the ac reading no load was well over 55V.

I can't wait to get home and put the hub I have mounted to my Leeson 1 HP 90V DC on this one!

What's cool about this deal is the HIVAC man said he thinks he may have several of these.

Get ready Jerry, I'm gonna need some blades!! :-)

Hi Roger

Most  I've collected have been the 1HP 12 amp. I do have one of the same motors you have though.

Working on a new hub for the plastic blades. It should be much lighter. I did one of these hub last year but a freind talked me out of it. I've been kicking myself ever since.

A complete 49" 3 blade will only be a couple LBs. This is the blade that did 1200 watts on a 1 HP Garbogen.

I'll post a picture when finished. I'm trying to make an aluminumblock thats mounts the blades at 23 degrees. This will alow you to mount the blades on any flat hub of your choice.

Roger
A couple of questions:

What modifications did you make, or was your test done as-is??

If one was a scrounger, where would one scrounge to find one of these? :-)

Willbill, Jerry,

The motor I got was from a HIVAC commercial guy here in Batesville, Arkansas. NOT exactly the metropolis of the south! -:)

I only stripped the "brain" off the back, which has some nice parts and is a big aluminum heatsink, major plus. Has 1 big rectifier. Unhooked all the blade connectors from the motor to the board and seperated. I stripped an inch off the 3 main wires from motor and tested the resistance at 12.7 ohms per phase. I don't know what the other 2 smaller wires are for. Spun the shaft like a boyscout fire starting deal. That's it.

I would like some advice Jerry on how you rectify? Also the hub sounds cool! 1/2" keyed, setscrew on flat??? Gimmie!

Anyway, the HIVAC tech said he threw 4 of these into the dumpster last week! ARGH. He got excited when I told him what I was doing with this thing, now I have to build him one, but I get all the rest he can find. OH MY GOD!!! I"VE INFECTED ANOTHER!!!

Most people are replacing the motor with an induction type AC motor when the brain goes bad. The fact that 6 months of living in humidityville is coming he expects to see several more this year. I've called a few of the places as far away as Memphis and have these dudes lookin' out for more. Trane AC/furnace systems used these, not sure of models.

The web site recently posted here about the arch segment magnets might turn of these sweeties into ugly little elctricity makers. They do have N-S pole selection and the price seems ok.

Gotta Go!

If he's net savvy, send him this way, if only to lurk.

I'd like to find out what models.  There are a few heat & air outfits in my area and I'd like to be able to tell them what to look out for (if they don't know already).

Hmm.  I live about 6 blocks away from the local trash recycling outfit, I wonder...
