Tech question on width of slots for laminated stator...

Hi All,

I'm making a stator out of a coil of flat steel. I'm planning to drill the holes for the coil legs to pass through, and before I get too far, I need a bit of help with the slots. My current thoughts are to drill the holes, fairly close to the surface, then cut the slots after.

What's the main purpose of the slot? To allow easier winding, or to allow the magnetic flux a path to the coil leg?

If it's to allow a flux a path to the wires, is there a "best" width to make the slots?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ted.

I have thought of that idea for machines as a whole.  In the manufacturing world, this practice would be frowned upon due to circulating currents.  Here, if you are careful, it could work for you.  One more thing, I think windstuff has done this kind of thing with success.  Also, to mitigate static torque, you may want to squew your slots.  There is a paper in my pictures that shows what slot and magnet squewing means...

Good Luck

   Ted,
The slot only needs to be just larger than the wire going into it.  Wide slots will have more of a pronounced cogging effect.

Thanks for the replies!

Ed- that's what I was hoping to hear - this will give a nice way to hold in the coils too. Another question - forgetting for the moment the additional work to wind it, what would happen if you skipped the slot altogether and just wound the coils into holes?

Learning and having fun too!

Monte....I'm just reading this and I know you're asking Ed...But I just had to laugh thinking of you weaving that wire thru holes...and those words forgetting for the moment the additional work to wind it, coming back to haunt you while you're saying with blisters on your hands ' I don't need this! '

        All light-hearted in fun!

  Ted,
I think norm is right... That would be alot of work!  I'm not sure there would be much of a gain in power if any at all.

I have to try thinking before typing...

Looks like there will be skinny slots on the stator. I'll post some pics if it turns out...
