What size generator needed for 2KW Heat Pump

Hi All

Can someone tell me the surge power I would need to operate a 220V 2kw heatpump(This is the wattage it uses while running approx.)If I had a 4000Watt 220V generator would it be enough to start and run the heat pump?

Julian

Juliang,

I'm no expert, but somewhere on the heat pump there should be a plate that tells you the minimum breaker size the unit requires. This is usually expressed in amps. Multiply the amps by 220 and you'll probably get a pretty good estimate on the watts needed for the start-up surge. The breaker has to be large enough to accomodate this without tripping.

Bach On's answer sounds good to me.

As a rough instant-answer, I'd say you'll have problems if the genny you're talking about is a newer, small-diameter, 3600 rpm cheapy.  There just isn't enough rotational-inertia in those to do a good job of starting induction-motors.

On the other hand, older 1800 rpm large-diameter cast-iron gennys carry enough inertia to spin up an induction motor almost as large as the genny.  Assuming you have a good high-torque engine driving it....like a diesel.

I routinely start a 10hp 3-ph motor with a 12kva diesel genset; and the motor is driving an 8' x 3' rock shaker-screen deck...i.e. a massive startup load...

That old 4-cyl diesel does puff black for a few seconds tho...<g>

I have an old military gen that is 10kw ran by a 4 cylender gas engine when I bought it the use of it was to opperate a small carnival they used it many years before they outgrew it now I use it and it is able to run my home and my neighbors with no problems (i.e. electric water heat cook stoves dryers) all on 220.      By the way the only reason that I bought that old gen is that I got it for $17.50   I doubt that this info is worthwhile, but it might help a little.
