newbie confused over ameretek motors ? useable?..unuseable?

I have been spending the last 3 months reading and reading about building my first genny(which is 2/3 of the way finished)...it seems when i find the answer to one of my questions, 2 more come up....my head hurts from learning....i now see why kids get the summer off from school.....it needs to sink in.....now to my question.....i have  been reading alot about ametek motors for wind generation...for the most part the postings say don't use them...but on e-bay,they are for sale and say they are good?...which one is it?...please help me clarify this....I am building 2 gennys like hugh piggots but when i seen that you can get a 400 watt ametek for 600 bucks, it sounded pretty good.........although i am building 2 genny's myself i may opt out to buy a couple also.....thanks guys again for your support...i will post pictures of mine soon.....pickster

Why are half of my postings getting lost?

Second try here.

I don't know if the motors are good or not myself. BUT, I would beleave what I read here and elsewhere before beleaving an e-bayer that is trying to sell them for $600!

I think you did say $600, that seems kinda high to me for 400 watts. I could be wrong?
.
nothing to lose

Spelin and tpying are my strong points, not electronics.

Ametek motors are a cheap alternative for trickle charging a small bank of batteries. For whole house use I would go with a larger commercial (1kw+) unit or build an axial. Many of those motors you see for $100+ on e-bay you can buy from surplus center for $40.00. ww.surpluscenter.com

thanks bill..........they claim that those ametek motors will run house power...so, it's confusing....i guess it's like the old addage....you don't see many counterfeit three dollar bills........also, this is why the guys in this forum don't use them....they aren't any good?.......oh well., i will move on....thanks for the help.........i sure wish they were good though,.......cuz they look pretty decent.....take care..pickster

I bought a Ametek 99v 535rpm motor. I have 4 ft alumium blades on it. I live in a neighboorhood where houses are very close together. With lots of turbulence I get about 25 watts in a 15mph wind.

yes, 600 watts is a bit much in my experience.  They make allright 100 watt, 4' dia machines.  You can see more from them in very high winds, but really they're good for only very small machines.  They also wear out fairly quickly, 1 - 2 years it seems.  At that time they may need new bearings and or brushes... and sometimes, I've seen the magnets break loose in them.

Its a great way to build a quick, simple wind turbine - it's nothing like what youll have when you finish building from Hughs plans...  it's a whole different thing.
