Hybrid waste oil burner
Just thinking out loud

I was reworking the propane burner on my foundry furnace.
I realized it mite be possible to build a hybrid oil burner.

Using a small atmospheric propane burner of about 10 thousand BTU an hour to vaporize an ignite the waste oil and bring in combustion air. For a130 or 140 thousand BTU an hour  burner
There would be no need for an air compressor or blower and spark    ignition for propane is a snap.
This would be easy to set up for thermostat control.

I tough about this after my experiments with babington and vaporized oil burners. I think it would be quite nice and safer to light...

If you try it plese post some pics.

I have been playing with pot burners and sprayers and haven't found any good way to light them
For un attended operating. As for the Babington I from the school that if you put fuel in a burner
it should all burn and not have part of it  dribbling back to a sump .

I hope to do some testing next week and I will take some pixs

Hi Old F,

I dont have much experience with waste oil burners. But I think your idea is a good one. In my combustion chambers (which are designed to burn corn or pellets) I have found preheating air going into the fire, go's a long way for performance. Also you have the advantage of being able to preheat the waste oil before burning it. Im not sure if it will clog this way or not. If its possible you might try a coil wrapped around the second tube to preheat the oil before injection. I get good results in my burners doing this type of thing with air.

The air will be pre heated I will tailor the propane burner for a flame temp of 1200 to 1600F.

The extra air needed for the oil will be drag in and preheated by the propane burner in to the
combustion chamber . The plan is to run the combustion chamber temp at about 1800 to 2000F.
I am thinking that this will give me a clean burn with little or no soot or ash like you get with
the pot burners. And I will be using a metering pump for the oil.

Can you tell me more about your corn burner
Sounds neat I cant grow oil but I do know how to grow corn : )

You sure can grow corn :)

I have done pretty well with the ash thing, I use a fluidized bed type of technique. The last time I cranked that thing up it was got so dam hot I could bearly stand next to it for any amount of time. And there is a loud jet engine roar that comes from the unit at full power. I have been observing a blue orange flame for some time. Pretty soon well have a steam engine running from this thing.

i made a nice waste cooking oil burner that will melt aluminum cans just fine, the flame is white to blue, with some orange showing up. it is a real b to get lit, but once going, it looks like a jet afterburner, sounds like an afterburner, and creates a bit of thrust. this thing runs for an hour or more on a 30 second charge of pressure supplied by a cheap 12volt tire inflator. i run it around 15 psi. a word of caution. if you are playing with these, especially if you are useing a copper coil for your vaporizer tube, have it inside a wood burning stove or at least a steel drum. after mine ran about 2 hrs, and melted some cans and aluminum pipe, it got too hot, and melted through the copper coil. foomp, cloud of hot vaporized oil, whooomph, bright flash, when it ignited all at once, and oh,s..., as non vaporized oil hit the inside of my firetube and sent flame 2 feet out both ends, billowing black smoke. this little thing was creating eneough draw on the intake to run a small turbine, as well as producing a good bit of thrust on the hot side. do not ask for too many details, unless you plan to up the $500 or so for a provisional 1 yr. patent. then i will give an explanation, demonstration and practical application and a few samples of this neat organic lipid thermal reactor out. the next one will be made from steel. i understand clean blue and white flame is the holy grail of waste cooking oil burners. this thing does it on so little power input, it is unbelievable. a bicycle pump could supply the power, if needed. oh, for raising oil temps, ptc thermosisters or old probe type chevy glow plugs work well. to make a tiki type burner,or firetube preheater, lifetime fiberglass wicks from home depot will burn with cooking oil or waste oil fairly well. the main thing here was BE CAREFUL WITH COPPER TUBE OIL VAPORIZERS, THEY CAN OVERHEAT AND BLOW
