it must be all in the mag.s

time to buy some neo.s

made dual 10" rotors using ceramic mag's..8 coils--double stacked mags on lower rotor . triple stacked mags on upper rotor.-- result--put out the same amount of power as my little 1/4 hp. motor conversion--which only used 6 cermamic mag's and
six coils..may be i made my coils to large for the mag's..i guess i should quit wasting my time with these ceramics--no real power !! well here's some pictures of a effort in futality !!

Hey! You produced power! No futility in that!

I would try tinkering with it more. do some experiments with coil sizes and maybe replace the ceramic magnets with Neodymium?

Looks neat!  Sounds like you had some success...
NdFeB magnets would help a great deal... assuming they were the same size, then you'd have a few times the output at the same rpm I suspect.

A couple of thoughts...

What's it that your magnets are glued to?
If its not fairly thick steel....  there may be a lot of room for improvement there.

What's the thickness of your airgap (distance from magnet to magnet on opposite rotors)?  Looking at the way the coils are mounted to a piece of plywood, I'm thinking it might be rather thick.  Even a small improvement in the airgap can make a big differance in power output at any given rpm.

those are just some metal pans i found at the thrift store -- i used some circulaer
saw blades on the back of each one to help stop the bleed throu of the mag's.
the air gap was as close as i could get it with out tearing up the coils--the shaft had a slight wobble --worn out bearing--i was just trying to get the most out of those ceramics--maxed out 6-8 volts --3 amps by hand,,my little 1/4 hp alt-has double
the power when powered by battery powered hand drill..well im takin a break from this
untill i have the right material--TIME TO HIT THE TRAIL !!!

maybe cope out the center of the coils add colls on the other side and add the bb's to in the center to  increase the magnetic  flow without a lot of cog  I have bb's
in the center of my pulse coils  and stater coils
blacksand close to the edge works well very little cog  I like the plywood I'll try one with the coils bonded to the wood but the coil positions cut out .

that little stator came off of my first windmill--using 6 harddrive mag's --just used it for lighting up some L.E.D.s,,--well its spring here now ..see u all in the fall---later..

last ditch effort for power--filled coils with bb.s--result--1 extra volt--small increase in amps--and a whole lot of cogging--this stator is heading for my 12" skillet--boil out the epoxy and reuse the wire for my next big blunder!!!

result--put out the same amount of power as
my little 1/4 hp. motor conversion
Laminations that's what makes ceramic mags
work so well....neo's is what makes air core
work so well ...just conclusion from what I've
read on the board. Your project wasn't an
exercise in futility...it helped illustrate these
two conclusions.
It just seems a shame to not convert some of
these used motors laying around, of course it
 all depends on individual preferences.

Hi Hiker,

I you can get the coils off the plywood, and set them in resin, or even just glued into the plywood (cut out the hole for the coils), from what i see in your piccies, you may be able to decrease the gap between the magnets by about a 1/3rd...
this should give more power output.

neo mags are considerably stronger than ceramics (6-8 times :)

also...

you have 3 x mags on upper rotor, and 2 x mags on lower rotor...
Have you tried it other way up?
Having 3 mags on the lower rotor may help overcome the larger lower gap caused by the plywood.
