How to size diodes

Hello. After searching the archives, I dont see how to find the size diode I need.My genny is charging about 13.5 vdc more or less on its side of the connector block. And on the battery side of the connector block 12.7 vdc.So the blocking diode is working. But when the genny is stoped, the the battery bleed's back about .8 volt to the genny.Of course this will run the battries down.My question is: how do you stop this bleed-back.    Please Advise.

frank;

Gee sounds like you got it in backwards.

Cheers.

Hey Tom. Dont the end of the diode with the band,go toward the batteries on the postive wire? This is the way I hooked up the homemade 120vac to 14vdc charger and it stops the 12vdc cooling fan from bleeding back.I am using a 3amp 200v diode.Would two in series stop the bleed over on my wind-genny?

          PleaseAdvise

Take a multimeter and check that current only goes one way if it doesn't get a similar new diode and check it I know absolutely nothing about diodes but maybe there is a top limit to the voltage? or maybe put two in series???
      Just trying to help.....

Well how exactly are you measuring this .8 volts???
Where do you have your meter connected when you
measure this.

It sounds like you have it connected right. Hmmm,
a 3A-200v diode. 3A could be a little low - depending
on the size of your generator. Might need to get a 5A
or 10A diode. The diode may be bad - let's the current
flow in the reverse direction. Check that diode or try
a new on in its place........

try using a fully bridged rectifier--their only a couple of bucks-and work a lot better than a single diode--hook up is easy two ac wires in --two dc wires out--try a 50 amp...or higher if you need more..

Sounds like you could be measuring the voltage drop across the diode put an amp meter inline and take a look

Hi Franko,

My $.02 says the diode is bad. I've seen this on my stepper motor mills, using salvaged diodes. A good diode will "block" the flow of electricity up about 80% of its stated rating, at least that's as far as I trust 'em. As far as using a bridge, you can do this too, but a single good diode works better. I put mine right at (10"+/-) the positive post. This way the mill output can stay higher along the wire run than diode blocking at the mill.
