puts out some power after all

my last posting i only used a battery powered drill-on this alt.-wasn't to happy on power output --it has four main coils and four start up coils--so next i hooked up a
power cord drill--the diffranse was like night and day--puts out over 45volts + and
peg's my little 6 amp metter--so its putting out more than 6 amps--had two 12v headlights hooked up to it at time of test--super bright..lots of hacksawing on that
rotor to make it square--holds two cermacis on each side--plus two layers of harddrive mags on top for extra kick..it was a 1/3hp motor--damm i didnt see the maytag name on it till i had the rotor redone--i just happen to have an old maytag whasher in my back yard that needed a motor!!!

was thinking about putting a bolt in each one of those holes in the rotor--should
give the  rotor more of a magnetic kick..

  2. 1 amps
had to sand down the casing to read it all--most likly will only put out a little
over 6 amps the way it is wired now--might tear it apart and wire all the coils in parrelle for more amps--works great as it is --for slow speed wind gen...

hey jerry did those square whashers at lowes work for you?
i saw some there but they were all 5/8"
u could use a 1/2" to 5/8" collar to work with those whashers..
they also carry those at lowes..

Hi hiker

I've not been to Lowes yet to check on those square washers? I was going to check at the local nut & bolt dist.

Thanks for the heads up on Lowes. The 5/8" hole is fine for me. Thats the size shaft I use in my motor conversions.

What are the outside demesions on the square washers?

theres two diffrent sizes--they look to be about 2.5  and 3.5"--not for sure ..
they are called anchor whashers i belive--real thick--so it should only take a small amout to make a rotor--use two small bolts to clamp the whashers togeather--then drill one hole all the way throu whashers and bolt--then use a larger drill and drill only part way down into whashers --so you can counter sink a bolt to hold the hole nine yards togeather..
that 1/3 hp motor alt..puts out a lot more amps. than my 1/4 hp motor alt..
must be those neo's i clued to the top of them--it really slams that 6amp meater
hard--so im thinkin its putting out a lot more than that..plus it seems having
the mags side by side not stacked [two high] like on the 1/4 alt.  seems to  work better--time to go and get some square whashers--it took me about 4 hours of hacksawing to make that rotor square on the 1/3hp. alt !!!!!! [maytag]
ps: had to hold those mags togeather in a vise to super clue them togeather..
that way each mag has the same pole facing up;;

It's  easy to add a shunt to increase  the amp reading on your existing meter ( I don't remember how, I just remember it was easy) I think (windstuffnow)Ed commented in a posting a certain guage wire a predetermined length....

Ooops...using a voltmeter instead of an ammeter...didn't quite know what I was talking about as usual but results what counts ...usually.

or maybe Hank and Ed and other 'knowledgable folks' have posted about shunts, and I guess you use a voltmeter instead of a multimeter (not an ammeter which would probably just 'peg out'...whereas a multimeter might blow a fuse or let the smoke out if too many amps)  guess I'm starting to babble...sorry.

Norm;

Here is my page on shunts:

Its kind of dated but the info is still valid.

Hi hiker
went to Lowes. The only had 3 of the 2.5". These have a 9/16" hole. The hole is acctully larger than 9/16" so I'll make these fit a 3/4" shaft. These were 38 cents each at Lowes.

Home Depot has a 2" for 25 cents it has a over sized 1/2" hole. I'll make these fit a 5/8" shaft. They also have a 2" X 9/16"hole for 19 cents.

All of the washers are about 1/4" thick.

I'm going to use an end plate from a speaker magnet to pin all the washers to the shaft.

I'll use small all thread through the lignth of this armature to hold every thing together.

I'll make one unit with just Big Box store parts (ceramic magnets) and one with NEOs.

This will be my first atempt at using big bar NEOs rather than curved NEOs.

The comparisons will be of intrest?

I'll try to get pics as these projects progress?

PS. Its real easy to make the right hole size with a Unibit.

10-4 jerry..

i had to lightly grind the sides of my ceramics to get a good fit..
i heard those neo's can catch on fire if you grind them to hard ..
just some info..
think i'll mount that maytag on my  motorhome .--i hit the beach a lot and its always windy--should keep the batt charged with the furnace motor going on and off..
thats an old maytag motor 40s 50s ?  i have a newer 1/4 hp motor and the rotors are
the same size.. not much have chaged in motors untill recently!!
