Used magnet wire

Is it worth it?

Hello to the group.

I've been looking for 14 gauge magnet wire for alternator coils. It seems to be short supply locally. I've noticed that all electric motors have wire in their windings. Is it worth removing this wire and using it again or will the insulation be damaged by it's use in the motor (high heat) or just by the physical act of removing it.

Thanks for any thoughts.

First thing when salvaging wire make sure that it isn't aluminum wire, with the protective coating it looks like copper...scrape the coating off if it is silver underneath....forget it! in my opinion it isn't worth it. I consider micro-waves the best source after practicing on a few you become proficient in disassembling the *^&$#(^$%# transformer laminations if the windings are coated in plastic you may have to scrap the first couple of layers or use acetone to dissolve and then coat it with a clear spray(some say).

Worth it? It all depends on the individual...if you like a challenge and what you consider fun....Me I think of all the time spent away from the 32 inch (or bigger) tv with surround sound and commercials trying to persuade me to get more energy hogs for an even more bloated life style.

Hello. I tried making my own magnetic wire.First Bought the already insulated kind then striped off the plastic covering. Then I tried white enamel paint...then amber shelac... varnish.I put arope in a tree and pulled the wire thru the paint etc.And strung it up to dry like that,I still rember the looks I got,and the laughing oh well.To check the insulating properties of the paint and or shellac,I hooked a 1.5 v battery to a small speaker, and probed the wire.I allways got the scraching sounds, meaning no go.Sucess in using the old stuff and making your own, both depend on whether the enamel cracks or not,it usually does.Just one crooked look and the enamel will fall off and disapear. You might save money and maybe not but the adventure is priceless.         Frankenbuger
