volts to high

picked up a used honda generator[300 watt]at a thrift shop..
worked fine after a tune up..it had a couple of termnails for 12v output..
so i hooked up a battery to it to charge, and it blew somthing out in the generator..
i guess i needed their special battery cables with built in diodes[not sure].
any way now it puts out 220volts-instead of 110,and 24volts instead of 12..
any ideas on what could have blown out? havent had a chance to tear it apart yet.
im thinkin its a briged rectifier of some sorts--or a voltage regulator ?????
