maged out

more mags more power

stuck on one more set of mags-now its 8 mags per coil[was 4 per coil]
amps jumped up and the volts --so far ive had over 20 amps output[thats with the drill a little past mediume speed] dont really want to go much faster ..the mags are only held on with superglue for now..im going to inlay them in 3/4" plywood-just like the coils-after that i should be able to crank it up..
the stator sure does vibrate at a certain speed-had to add some more epoxy to keep the coils in place..it may not gog like a motor --but it sure loads up in a hurry when theirs a load on it..[hard to turn by hand when the output leads are shorted].
put out an easy 10 amps with the drill at a slow speed.[those are ceramic mags]should top out at 35-40 amps???later..............

hiker;

Golly, I sure like a nice woodpile.

And I notice you have a nice stator and mag rotor there too!

Cheers.

Wooden stator (3.00 / 0) (#8)
by chux0r on Sat Sep 11, 2004 at 11:51:13 PM MST

I'm interested in that wooden stator... most of the Otherpower designs build the stators entirely out of the poly resin, but this seems a bit easier.  Well, easier for those of us that are good with wood, I suppose.  You could even still fill in the gaps with resin to combat the vibration.

But I don't know... I've never worked with poly resin before, so maybe it's not as hard to deal with as I imagine???

Anywho, what are the upsides/downsides to using a wooden stator such as this as compared to the resin kind?  I imagine at least that the resin stator is a bit more weatherproof.  What about durability and whatnot?

Lookin good hiker.

Is that a single rotor or is there 2 saw blades with magnets?  what are the shiny wite things on the magnets or is that just shinny glue?

Are those the Lows ceramic magnets? 4 per pole?

Lotsa ? HUH. Well its cause I'm gonna do one just like yours. So keep making improvements and when you've got it all perfected I'll just coppy you LOL.

Thanks for the inspiration.

its a dual rotor jerry--those shiny things are harddrive mags..thought i might toss
them on there to see if i would get any extra power..i may knock them off so i can get a more even airgap--still need to carve a blade and figure out some kind of furling system made from wood--damm ive got to start workin on the house before the snow flys--this stuff can really get out of hand !!!!

guess i forgot to mention it should put out 35-40 amps with the stator split in half
and rectified with the output of each hooked up in parelle--works great also with all coils in series--more volts less amps.. was putting out 50+ volts with half the amount of mags..should be putting out more now[need to secure the mags better for that test,]theres the drill on the ground i used for testing-not the batt. drill on table...
  later.......

Like the setup, I've started on a smaller sawblade mill, I've not even finished the alternator yet.  (diary of 10 september) Hadn't thought of stacking the magnets on the rotors like that. How many turns and what guage did you use in the coils?  I'm thinking about rebuilding my my stator so I was looking for some background info so as to know what to expect.  So far it looks like you are getting good results, and I'm not afraid to copy good ideas.  Just Having fun, Rich

i most likly will never see 35-40 amps with a blade..
it would have to be cranked up fairly high.
should see it with my bigger drill thou..
like i said it puts out good amps at a fairly slow speed --so im going to try
for a early furl--with a 7.5 or 8 foot blade..
who knows!!

this started out as a test set up [don't know for sure if its a keeper].
all made from scratch-bearings from old minne bike-second hand wire-whitch has been
used over and over again-old plywood for stator-mags from last attempt[one new set]
other wood from scrap pile..and it goes on and on and on.....................i think i can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel!!!

oh--85 turns 15-17 gauge wire[mixed]-i think it would start charging earlyer if i
had 100 turns per coil..this is a single phase setup--would like to try 3 phase
if i could ever figure out the wireing--theres so many diffrent ways to do it..

The vibration is extreme because you've got a single-phase design.  You can mitigate it with a polyphase design.  (Even a two-phase.)
