Could you use steel Tape Messure for Laminates?

I am now abl to get hold of 3m/10ft steel Tape Messures for 50p each.  I was wondering if i could use these Tape Messures to save time on my school As project and use them for making the laminates as they are allready insulated?  I would also like to now wether 3m is to long for a single laminate or if they the they should be cut down to a smaller length?

See below for more info on my project.

I would like to include comments in my school work but if you would not like me to include you thread then please write in the text.

Thank you for your time help etc.. :)

Tape measures would be far from ideal as they are a sort of spring steel which has a high carbon content.  If you have a definite use for the project when you have finished I wouldn't advise it, but if it is just a theoretical exercise you could justify it on the grounds that you could not easily get the proper material at a reasonable price. It will make starting bad and low wind speed poor, but as long As you explain these problems in your notes it could be ok.

I am not sure what you mean by the second part of your question, 3M is nowhere near enough for a core. If you are worried about it all being in one length, you needn't be, there is no  virtue in using short pieces, you may have read of people using short strips of transformer steel, this is not because of losses, they just aren't big enough to cut into one long strip.

If you have a better material than tape measures and are put off by the problem of insulating between turns, remember that the voltage between turns is tiny ( microvolts), so a strip that has been annealed and has an oxide coating on is probably good enough, give it  a lick of paint or varnish to make sure.

I have a feeling that soft iron wire that florists use with a coat of paint and wound into a coil would be much better than tape measures.

I think it is possible to buy mu-metal sheet and tape for reasonable prices.  Don't get it from the health faddists or the orgone mob, just go to your local speciality steel place or transformer winders.

I've been a little surprised to see that the WonderMagnet people don't stock it: it seems like an obvious hole in their product line.

If you do decide to go ahead with tape measure stock, don't buy it.  Every sub-contractor I know has a five-gallon bucket full of busted measure tapes, so just ask around the nearest construction site.
Good luck on the project & have fun.
