Im new to this board but have been wanting a Lister 6/1 clone for some time. Is there anyone near central Va. who does this? Shipping these things is expensive.

Thanks, Steve

They would have to ship them too. Then they would mark up their cost, No??  Better that you contact a freight forwarder as they do this all the time, and can usually get a better deal on the freight. I just love the sound of my listeroid.

Id talk with George at utterpower.com
My experience with him has been excellent - his website is a great service to all of us, his artical on 'lister longevity' is well worth having.  My guess is you'll not save a great deal in shipping even if you do find a closer importer.  Shipping can be fairly reasonable if you look around and Im not sure that distance plays that big a role in the overall price.  I shipped my 1200 pound lathe here, (Colorado) from Maine for under $400, so I think you could ship a Lister from the West coast for a reasonable cost.  I've seen other dealers on ebay that are on the East Coast - but judging from the information they give (Their item descriptions) I'd be inclined to work with utterpower.com even if shipping costs a touch more - George is very supportive and he *knows* what he's selling and he'll be the first to tell you about problems you might encounter.  He's also familiar with the pros and cons of the different manufacturers.

George has contacts with agents who arrange to use spare space on trucks heading across the country. I ordered a generator for him. It was cast iron and really heavy, but the shipping cost from Washington state to North Carolina was just a bit over $200. I thought that was pretty reasonable.

Between $750 - $1500 probably depending on which one you get.  Some manufacturers do a better job than others - the less expensive ones probably require some cleaning, some adjustment..  and possibly a bit of overhauling before you'd expect a reliable engine. Mine was one of the 'cheap' ones - it came with sand in the crank case, badly adjusted valves, generally 'poor' fit an finish throughout - *but* it has all the right stuff, like roller main bearings,  replaceable cylender sleeve etc...

Id email George at utterpower.com - or at least, explore his site.  it has a lot of good information.

Hi Everyone!

My name is Mike Montieth. I have been importing the Lister clones since 1997. I'm located in Rutherfordton, North Carolina, 28139. This is just to let anyone interested know that I have another shipment of the GM-90 series Lister type Listeroids coming in soon. There will be 6/1, 8/1, 10/1 and some monster 20/22/1 engines as well with electric start and over 600 lbs of flywheels to start those heavy loads. I'll also have a load of the Lister twins 12/2 and 16/2 coming in around December. There is also a new Lister type engine that will be available around the first of the year. It is a small, almost half size lister single. It still has the double flywheels and looks like a scale model of the full size Lister. Its about a 4 1/4 X 4 1/2 stroke engine. It'll be about a 4/1 engine at 650 rpm. Prices will be as reasonable as I can make them but won't be fixed until they clear Customs and final delivery. These are high quality engines with direct injection, counterweighted cranks for smooth running, water pumps, thermostats, and more. Electric starting is also available. My email is mdmo@rfci.net

I just saw Mike's post.  I am a recent customer of Mike's and can say I am very pleased withthe 2 engines I bought from him. And pleased with his service.  Aside of some minor nuisance items such as plastic water pump hose that melts and need replaced immediately with good rubber rad hose, a broken decompression lever ( I was able to weld it back together) these engines are top quality.  No sand in the oil sump to deal with, the valves were factory adjusted properly, the engines are packed decently, I only had a slight dent on one of the fuel tanks due to some parts moving around in one of the crates, but really no bid deal considering the long trip these engines take. The water pump that comes with these engines (note that most Listers don't come with these) is top quality.  They have tapered roller bearings and removable sylinder sleeves for longevity and repairability. The engines I bought are 10 and 12 hp singles which run at higher 1050 rpm, and have slightly smaller diameter flywheels for that higher speed.

Now if somebody can tell me how to reasonably mount an engine starter that works effectively, I would be grateful. Also I wish to install an alternator - any ideas how to mount one?
Thanks

Thanks Bill, I appreciate the good comments. Electric start is available on the GM-90 engines. In the parts I have coming with the shipment I have a number of ring gears for retrofit on manual crank start engines. I plan to match them with an appropriate US made starter once I have something to match, preferably a delco remy, so parts are easy to get and locally available. I also have extra flywheels that I can machine for the ring gears on an exchange basis. I also have plans to build delco 10si alternator mounts, thermostat housings, heat exchangers, serpentine pulley sets, ect when I get out of school in December.
