FWD hub for wind gen?

An idea for Zubbly

I was thinking today as I read Zubbly's alt post about using a FWD spindle for a wind gen. I know the Dans like the Volvo rotors but if you modified the outer CV joint on a FWD hub so that it was much shorter and teminated with a Lovejoy connection you could insert different alts at will simply by removing one alt and replacing with another without touching your blades. Looking at the bearings in a typical alternator it does not look like they are really set up to carry the load of a prop. If you seperate the prop loads from your alt your alt bearings would probably last a long time.  For a real mega alt using a full floating rear hub from a one ton axle to support your prop would probably allow for a giant prop to run very reliably.
Just a thought, John.......

Hi John

I've been flying a car alt as a wind genny for 3 years now. Its still going strong. the blades are direct mounted.

HI Whatsnext: I like the idea though. It's especially a good idea if one were toying with a much larger wind generator. You don't have your pivot offset, so you would have to use some other means of high winds governor.

Zubbly, I know that. That's why I made the post. I thought that since you seem to make a lot of different alts that it might be a good idea, for you, to make a wind mill that allowed for quick change alts.

Zubbly, Any time. I realise that your different alts would need to be pretty similar to be using the same set of blades but still the idea of a quick change set up seemed kind of nice when it first came to me.
Please keep s informed of the progress on the alt conversion. Where I work we send out about 400/year to get rebuilt. I'm going to give the rebuilder a call to see if he has any ideas.
