Coil Construction

Hello, I am very new to this but it has stirred a great deal of interest in me. I have some questions that I need help with. I have no experience in these things so I am pretty much going to attempt to just stumble my way through. My question is about coil size vs. magnet size. I have been looking at the otherpower.com site and I wish to build a very small version of either the homebrew windmills or the wooden alternator or... something in between, if that's possible. If I used 10mm neo mags, how should I design the coils? Should the coils be larger than the magnet faces? Should they be made of smaller wire with more wraps or will less wraps of larger wire work as well?

The 10mm neo mags may not be what I use. I have not obtained the magnets to do this with yet so I am open to other magnets although price means everything to me at this point. I realize that you guys are not going to give a newbie a complete crash course on coil construction but the answers to the few questions here will really help.

hello nice to have you here...i am on my second genny so i have had some experience with this ...for your first question how should I design the coils?...the hole in the center of the coil should be the size of the magnets used....the magnets should be neodyniums and they aren't cheap....i found that using #14 wire 2 strands together and 30 turns, was an excellent choice for me....i think if i were you, i would read danb's post on their 10' machine and also hugh piggot's book that is sol here on forcefeild......this will give you a great statr....i built the bracket for my windmill as per hugh's book and i took danb's suggestion on wire size....this worked out great for me....it's up to you what you want to do, but it is alot safer to emmulate someone elses work until you get a full grasp on what you're doing so as not to waste your time or money......below is a picture of my last genny(with help from internetfred) while bench testing...notice the headlight lit! :D   take care...picksterwith help from internetfred

Thank you picmacmillan. I can't get a book right now but maybe I can next month. You are right. It would be better to copy someone elses hard work right now...lol. Money doesn't seem to be growing on trees right now in Georgia.

For a good start-to-finish thing about these units, try this if you haven't already. . . It goes into depth pretty good on all aspects of these things!

In my opinion, that was the best set of pages and the ones I still refer to regularly when showing others information about these things!

yes, doug is right....i have read the ten foot machine pages more than the good book at night :D  they are right on, the only thing i did was made my bracket like hughes book cuz i didn't have a vovo strut, and dan told me what size wires and rounds he would do if he were to make it like mine....you can't go wrong by following that windmills pages......pickster
