Coil spacing question

how big or small

On a three phase single rotor machine how big should the coil be, assuming a theoretical round coil and magnet. I'm hoping a 1" dia magnet will work with a 1" wide coil.
TIA, John......

You usually want the inner diameter of the coil the same as the outer diameter of the magnet. So you coil will be bigger than 1", how much though depends on what size of wire you use, and how many turns.

Make the holes the size of the magnets and let the outsides touch and you will be near enough.

a common practice here is to use 9 coils and 12 magnets or 12 coils and 16 magnets...3 coils are supposed to cover 4 magnets...if you know how many magnets you are going to use, then maybe you can utilize what someone else has done as far as the size your stator will be and # of turns of wire, size etc...pickster

Pichster, Is this the common practice for three phase, single rotor machine?. I'm planning on 40 poles on a 14" dia rotor. 7/8dia x3/8 N40 neos that I already have. I kind of thought I'd make a larger diameter version of the ones Windstuff Ed does which, if I read his stuff correctly, would require a total of 60 coils. I want the number of coils to be evenly divisable four and three for all the obvious reasons.

For 40 poles you can use 30 coils as a single layer winding or you can use 60 or 120 coils in an overlapped coil winding.

For 30 coils follow the dimensions above with holes as per magnet and coils touching.

For overlapped coils make the coils so that sides are over adjacent magnet centres and make spacing so that the three phases fill the total circumference at the centre.

Windstuff Ed has good details of the coil layout but you will not do so well without the sector shaped magnets that are better suited to overlapped coil windings.
