Is this one any good ?

Hi gentlemen,

Walking by the trash bin at work the other day I noticed this Pm permanent magnet brushless DC motor. I picked it up and found that it was trashed cause the electronics went to magical smoke.

Brand name: EG&G Rotron (ametek)
Model: M64D500-2043-3FIC-3221RF-CCW
Voltage: 74 VDC; 12.0 amps; 1250 RPM; max amb: 85°C

Here is how it looks after removing the smoked electronics that was located on the right side were is the small size shaft.

I did some test on it, here is the set up. The output of each phase was rectified trough a three phases rectifier. The rpm was measured using a tachometer that could be seen on the left.

Here is a pic of the DVM reading.

And here results of open volt testing for diffrent rpm. The rpm was measured using a tachometer

The resistance measured between each coil using this meter is 0.6 ohm. Cogging is quiet impressive...

Here are the questions.

Is this one any good ? Or should I simply return it from were I took it

My intention is to use it to charge a battery for my remote hunting/fishing camp. The system will be small, It will be use only for some lighting (4 to 5 12 V cfl lights), 3 reading lights and a car radio.

In your opinion what rotor size (blades) would be a good match ?

Direct coupled or belt driven ?

Looks good to me!
Sorry. Can't help with the blades.
Who / what threw it out?

To size blades oen would want to know watts under load at RPM, desired battery voltage at a minimum.

Looks like it would be good for 12 volt systems as it puts out 16 v at 300 RPM though you indicate it cogs pretty badly. Start up could be a problem.

It does look like a good WP candidate, as an AC generator (with rectifiers).  300 RPM would be easily achievable with a direct drive blade for a nominal 12 volt system.  For better torque, the blade would need a somewhat unconventional tip/speed ratio, but I am no expert on that. The cogging may or not be a problem; there was a posting to this board in the last few days with some measurements re cogging and blade design that should prove useful.  The machine does look pretty heavy for its rather limited power potential, but that is up to you and your mechanical capabilities.

hello looks like you must work at the rail road i used 1 of them for my first turbine i used 3 jerry blades in very high winds i saw about 25 amps if you had 2 of them with a cupler inbetween it would do a lot better i used a brige rectifer from a gm alt. it work great this was on a 12 volt system
good luck

Thanks all for your comments.

Scott ya...you are dead on the track I work for Via Rail Canada. And this brushless come from a locomotive fuel pump.
