Ever ordered anything from these guys?

Well you should!

I ordered up a dozen 2 x 1 x half inch magnets on Wednesday of this past week.

I went to my PO Box this morning (Saturday) and there they were.

I placed the order on the web order page, and about 2 minutes after I hit submit I called to double-check the shipping arrangements (to the PO box not my house!). They already had the order on-screen and were helpful and quick in verifying the shipping address.

The box arrived in great shape, complete with a Faraday cage (right name?).

Not only that if you check around on the Web I doubt you'll find a better price by a long shot on these mags.

Thanks you guys!

Now on with the motor conversion. I have heavy leather gloves on to handle these things :)

Ted.

I ordered some books a couple of weeks ago. Very fast indeed. This week I also ordered magnets and magnet-wire (haven't arrived yet). They indeed have good prices. I was going to order the magnets for Hugh Piggott's windmill of powermagnet.com to cut on shipping costs (live in Belgium, powermagnet is in the UK), but they are not as easy to order from, and they don't have such a nice forum :-)

One thing that isn't completely as I would like it (but is as I suspected), they only sell magnets which have sizes in inches. Hugh Piggott suggested in his booklet to pick inches or cm for the magnets (they are slightly different sizes) and stick with it for the rest of the design. Now I am "forced" to make my windmill using inches, and I don't even have a ruler in inches :-). However, I'm sure that after this project I will be able to think in inches & cm's alike.

Sven

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

If you have magnets in inches, keep the alternator dimensions in inches and use the correct number of turns if they are different.

You can use metric for the rest of the machine. The thing to avoid is mixing inch and metric on individual things such as blades.

To drill the fixing holes for the propeller you will have to use dimensions to suit the hub. Normally North American hubs are on an inch pcd and European ones are metric ( 100mm )

Very good. I plan on ordering some magnets in the next couple of weeks. The only thing is I wish there was more magnet wire.

hi ted,
i will endorse that. ordered 4 12volt cfl lamps from them. they arrived well packed within 8 days to the UK. they cost 1/3 the price of the same units in the UK which even with the exchange rate is still cheaper and that includes the postage. one of them was not working, manufacturing fault not packing so i phoned them and they are going to replace the broken one free of charge. cant do better than that. well done guys.

I have purchased from forcefield several times, each time the response and shipping and service was rapid. I endorse them because their integrity is intact. No problems whatsoever. I highly suggest them any day of the week.

This is probably important (although perhaps not entirely legal):  About a year ago I ordered some 1 X 2 X 1/2 inch neos for Hugh Piggot's plans - I'm in Ireland (EU) and the magnets arrived fine.  But I didn't get charged for import tax or VAT - VAT/Import-tax is normal with some courier companies (FedEx are really good at following up - DHL doesn't seem to be so good at collecting - even for their own courier costs).  The important thing here is that because there was no follow up for other taxes the dollar price for me buying was good (US->EU exchange rates taken into account) compared to a UK company.  If I'd had to pay lots of tax/duty then the US price might have been a poorer choice compared to the UK but in this case i did well.

I have placed a few orders and never had a lick of trouble.

From the, "How much is a lick?" dept,

troy

ps, I love the English system of measurement, though the metric is far FAR easier to use. I enjoy it because it's ideosyncratic. I mean, who thought up 5,280 feet/mile?  How many teaspoons in a gallon?  How many yards in a rod?  How many rods in a mile?  What's a miner's inch (hint, it's not a length measurement.)  How many pecks in a bushel?  How many quarts in a peck.  What's the difference between an Imperial gallon and a US gallon?  I could go on...for a country mile.

I bought some magnets from K&J Magnetics.  I ordered them one day in the afternoon, they were at my house the next day.  K&J is in Pennsylvania and I live in PA.  Don't know how the service is to other places, but I was impressed with delivery in less than 24 hours.

I don't think you will find a better group of people to work with. Every time I have ordered from OtherPower.com I have been astonished by how quickly I took delivery.

I ordered both Hugh Piggott's  Wind Power Workshop and How to Build a Wind Turbine and studied them many times..... (Highly recommended)but was incredibly impressed with the on-line documentation provided by OtherPower.com (When it was time for construction I relied on OtherPower... Why? Just easier to follow their construction details).

I've never met any of the OtherPower folks but after toiling for nine months on my first machine with their constant on-line help I consider the good folks at OtherPower.com part of my rural community and family. OtherPower.com may be running a business but I see them as the spear tip of Peace. (Strange thought? I am sick of war and death for oil & global power!)
