Anyone familiar with Yanmar 3.66?

I have a chance to get one cheap

I'm looking at a Mitsu reefer truck that I plan to take the box off to put a flatbed on. I'll end up with a ThermoKing diesel reefer unit that I could probably sell or use the Yanmar 3.66 to power a diesel gen. Is anyone familiar enough with this engine to know if it's good for use as a long term standby power plant? It's a three cylinder rated at 11.4HP at 2400 rpm.

I have had some experience with those. My parents used to own a trucking company, most of their trailers were reefers. Other than routine maintenance (around twice a year) they would just keep on ticking. Some were working 16+ hours a day and never had problems. Furthermore, they sip on diesel. You should be able to run them on WVO. ONLY problem I see with them was noise... They do run a little loud, but I'm sure with a propper shed that could be taken care of.

I don't know that specific model, but I have two Yanmar Diesel powered generator sets from Northern Tool and a Yanmar 22 horse diesel Tractor. All run for ever with little or no engine trouble. I've since heard that John Deer took over the tractor line.

I have a kubota 12 hp 3000rpm engine from a reefer I built a genset from a few years back. Go for it. Best thing I ever built. You should get a 7.5 or a 10.0 KW gen head for it. You wont get but about seven thousand watts give or take from it full time. The larger head will run cooler much better than pushing a smaller head lie mine to the limit all the time. I have melted a few capacitors wires a couple of times overloading mine. They cost fifty bucks a piece to replace. I have a Carrier five KW 120 volt head and a two and one half KW  240 volt heads on mine. A little welding, a couple of afternoons hunting down belts and pulleys and now I have around 1250 hours on my genset. Check your reefer it might have a generator head in it. Mine did. It was to power a 5KW electric heater when trailers went north during the winter.

I just purchased a 12KW diesel unit to replace it at my cabin. Always need more power you know. Actually we need more aircondition than the small unit can provide during the hot summers around here.
Hence the larger unit. I did bring the Kubota home to install for emergency use here. We used it for Katrina for a couple of weeks to keep the refrigerator, a small window unit, TV, Sat, and a few lights. Diesel is the only way to go.
Much easier to find after a hurricane when gasoline gets scarce. My friends were using 45 gallons of gasoline a week. I used about twenty gallons of diesel a week running the unit all night long shutting it down around 8:30 each morning and restarting it at 5:00 when we got home each evening.
