I know that this is still pretty amateur stuff compared to a number of the projects posted here (and have been my inspiration)... But I thought just one more posting wouldn't hurt...

Frank;

Actually looks pretty darned nice! Lots of skill showing there I will personally never possess.

And solved the mystery of where my step ladder went, too. I see you are putting it to good use supporting the mill when lowered. Haha.

Cheers.

Great looking genny you got there Frank.

And  now some questions  from one sand crab to another.

What  sand mix are you  using  for the lost foam patterns?

What size gates and riser  did you use?

What size furnace do you  have and what are you firing it with?

And what lathe is in the Pic?

Nice to see one hobby being used for another.

Keep the furnace hot and have fun.

nice one Frank...
and all the info you have on lost foam casting on your site ( http://www.theworkshop.ca ) is very interesting to say the least. I noticed you hade some probs with air bubbles in your p.o.p. coatings... have you tried a vibrating plate to shake out the air bubbles? it works well for me for making p.o.p. molds for bismuth casting.

Thanks for the comments!!!

In reply to Old F & Paul...

I have moved the majority of my casting to Cope & Drag using a commercial sand that comes pre-mixed with a synthetic binder. On occasion I still do the orginal LFMC using loose sand but mostly for irregular shaped patterns that can't be easily extracted from the mold.

The Lathe is a pre-1928 Atlas (by most estimations) but is simply marked "Utility Lathe"...

Frank, did you 'give away' those HD plaques yet?
just a thought, you could sell them on ebay as 'custom works of art' ;)

Oh Yeah... there was no problem finding friends that wanted those...

I did do a neat job this past summer dressing-up a sporster with 3 castings. But of late have been on a nature & rural scenes kick with the castings.

Looks good!

I'm wondering about the blades to motor matching. That gives me fits.
Does the motor having a normal cutin of about 350 RPM seem more suited to a smaller faster blade.

PMG numbers here...
http://www.theworkshop.ca/energy/Wind/4/wind4.htm

Anyone with thoughts about better matched blades? Or are those blades about right?

Mr Hurd,

You're right about the lack of blade to gen matching... My intention with this unit was largely just to cobble together a set of hand carved blades and see what all was involved, material, labour and tools wise.

It proved to be a much less daunting task than I anticipated, and have already charged a 6V golf cart battery... The blades are grossly unbalanced but start charging in a fresh breeze (as opposed to a light of stiff breeze)... It's getting embarrassing that I still have yet to measure wind speed accurately.

The size of the blades was based on the early "Wood-Ax" posted on this site, and the rough shape was from the public domain "Blade Carving guide" by Hugh Piggott.

Radio Shack got another batch of 'Digital Wind Gauges' in some stores maybe 3 months ago. They are not online that I can find.
Not sure how great they are, but I like it. Starts registering at 6MPH.

Only US$10. Part #63-1119.

   Hi Frank,
Looks really good, and I noted an offset, between the "mount"and center of the gen thrust -- is this for a future, furling tail ??
Annamometers would be nice to have, and have to admit, I don,t have one either but am in the process of building one ( that one Gurd mentioned, I,ll have to check on )    The price of the commercially made ones, Is scarry!!
Keep experimenting and posting -- I,m sure we all enjoy your posts, and I love looking at that pond, Makes me want to get out the fishing pole !!  Bill H.....
