Blades downwind of generator?

Possible way of

I was going to do a search, but wasn't sure of the terminology to use, so here goes.....

Has anyone tried putting the blade assembly on the downind side of the generator?  For two reasons I think this would be a benefit..

  1.  The need for a tail would be negated as the blades would create the force necessary to point it in the right direction
  2.  The need for a furling system could be incorporated into the blade mounts themselves by using springs.  As the wind pressure got high enough to the point where you'd want furling the springs would allow the blades to bend away from the generator effectively taking most of thier "energy extraction" area out of the direct force of the wind.  Of course, this would only work on a downwind system as blades bending back on one that was mounted upwind would strike the tower (VERY bad thing).
Is this an idea that's been tried and failed, or is this something that was proven to be a bad idea long before it could be implimented?

Just wondering.

Yes they are called "down wind machines" ( not surprisingly) and several companies make them.

Hi Nano,

Have a look at the site of WindstuffEd (www.windstuffnow.com ?); he has built a downwind generator. It inspired me to use my mini-genny as a downwind generator; it furls upwards in high winds. This seems such a simple design, it is bound to work. Downside is that the mast may cause some turbulence that may interfere with the prop blades. For me, the mechanical advantages (short/stubby setup, mechanically simple, easier furling mechanism to build) outweigh the disadvantage of turbulence.

I thought in windstuffed's case, the turbine didn't immediately respond to changes in wind direction; I think it is caused by the heavy weight & inertia of his 'solidly' built generator.

Part of my downwind mounting system is finished; it is for my mini-genny (10W normal; 50-60W max; .7m prop diameter). It will serve as a testbed, though I think my first, real windmill (10ft) will be of the 'usual' furling variety (upwind prop).

The only thing that makes me suspicious about downwind blades is that I don't see many of them flying... There must be downsides to downwind gennies, but I can't think of them (apart from turbulence; or am I underestimating this effect?)

Am looking forward to more info on downwind gennies in this thread.

Nano, Heres one comercial site....
http://www.synergypowercorp.com/slgwind.htm

As Peter said they are a little noisy because of the tower interupting the wind but work fine. I have a 3000 series flying.
