Dan F has his new  ticket   How many do we have here?

I start the check in.

N8QJU  Dave Sipe aka Old F

Editors Note:

This would be more appropriate as a Diary entry since it is not really related to R.E.

I'm going to veto the editor, and put it on the front page, because --
7 months ago, I would've absolutely agreed that this was off-topic. But 6 months ago, our Direcway VSAT and Voice over IP phone system stopped working. It appears that Direcway is blocking VoIP from the source (us), but can't block it coming in -- we can receive calls up here, but not place them. Unfortunately, 911 doesn't call us in emergency, we have to call them! That's one of the main reasons I decided to get my Ham ticket -- we can hit a phone autopatch repeater easily from here on 2 meter band. Even it's just to order pizzas and beer for monday windmill school!
Ham radio now appears to be our most reliable source of emergency communications. The cell phone reception is still terrible up here, 50:50 for getting out, and about 5% chance of calling in. Not acceptable.
Once I figure out the programming, I plan to set my new rig (a Yaesu 8900 quad-band) up as an always-on repeater -- so that neighbors who are hams can hit the phone autopatch even with tiny handheld radios. Fortunately my location is on a high ridge that looks both down and up the canyon.
ADMIN
PS -- sorry mr. editor -- we'll move all this ham radio talk to diaries or another board after we find out how many hams we have here! I'd like to see them all check in.

boB  K7IQ here...   The old old Home Power magazines had ham radio articles.

Richard Perez talks (or used to at least) to other offgrid geeks
on 2 meters since he was out it timbucktwo.

Check out the homepower group on http://groups.yahoo.com  We had some HF AE nets on 20 and 40 meters when the bands were decent.  That can happen again of course.

Ok, it is your right to do so, as with the offgrid TV show thing,  but while it is semi topical it is another step in totally the wrong direction. My personal opinion, of course. Once again, I find myself totally at opposite ends from the proprietors of what constitutes topical info on this board.

You might want to task someone with spam patrol as it does sneek in regularly and is part of the unseen grunt work I won't be doing for awhile.

Rather than raise a stink I think I will just walk away for now.

Anyway, I tried my best. No hard feelings just a feeling of personal loss having failed in trying to herd this beast into a focused and useful resource. Partly mid winter blues partly burnout so carry on and all the best wishes and continue to have fun.

Renewably yours;

Editor.

"Anyway, I tried my best. No hard feelings just a feeling of personal loss having failed in trying to herd this beast into a focused and useful resource. Partly mid winter blues partly burnout so carry on and all the best wishes and continue to have fun."

Awe, don't take it hard, you done a great job, heck even the Pres gets over ruled at times. And look at the "Don't Ask, Don't tell" and "Can you define the word sex" scandels of the past :)
It just comes with the position at times I geuss (though he really was asking for it)!

You have done well as a herd master of the beast, and for the winter Blues Burnout, well there are more self imposed deaths this time of year than any other, many more bridge jumpings etc.. so cheer up, we love ya, it will pass.

(Psst.., watch him close guys if he says he wants to climb a tower for airgap adjustments, ok) wink wink.

He did say he would move it later I geuss, and this could be a good thing to hang around. In a diary it might get lost quick. I was interested in becomming a ham many years ago myself, but never did, if enough guys are into such things I may take up acting again. Oh, uh, wrong ham eh :)

Seriously I never got into the radios like I wanted to years ago, if many of the folks are into ham it may revive my interest later also. Though not RE perhaps, I can see how it would at least fit into rural living and such pretty easy. As was stated, phone patch, remote rural areas without land line service. Or emergency use etc...

What ever happened to packet relay for computers or modems? That was my original interest in ham, back around 1988 or so. Had a friend doing something with that, could transfer computer files with Ham cross country, took forever as I recall but worked. Back before internet!

For off grid remote rural living, way way way off, such things may still be very usefull.

Networking all the Amateur Radio operators for A.E. (Wind Gennie building in particular) is a very good idea. There may be a lot of Amateur Radio folks that will decide to put a gennie on top of that tower along with that dipole or beam antenna : )

And to the Editors of Fieldlines out there at large... You do great work. I realize it's a delicate balance of keeping FL focused while at the same time allowing it to grow with some diversity and vigor while keeping it aimed at building those gennies ! Great work.

Also for your continued patience of allowing newbies to come aboard and feel part of the group by asking simple questions that may indeed be buried deep within the forum discussion archives. The thing this accomplishes is giving them a sense of contact, a sense of live one on one encouragement... Something that archive reading alone does not facilitate.

May everyone have Sunny skies, a stiff breeze and maxed out amp meters : )

But since they're of glass...

Have some of those lying around, though I have much more of their European equivalents (ECC81/ECC82/ECC83).

Now I begin to wonder; could they still have a use in windenergy... Can't think of anything myself (that a transistor or IC wouldn't do better with less components and less waste of power).

I note that one of the previous posts someone mentioned having a 200 watt cb station. Why not just get a ham license? Last I checked they still fine people for that kind of power on the cb freqs.
Was active during the Mt. Saint Helens blow up (yes i was in the area of the fallout)and passed many messages because the phones were useless. And as far as people knowing what was happening... we knew before the local radio and tv announced it because we were talkin with people who were in the blast zone... I heard the last transmission of one of them before he perished. Boy... i guess im starting to sound like an OLD ham now... hee hee

Hi
de ve6aym in Edmonton, Alberta, canada..

Been a ham for 48 years.

Way back when, alternate or re power was always a part of the ham radio world as far as
providing emergency communications to the community.

Disaster areas typically had power lines wiped out..thus, genertors, wind, solar power
was used..Heck if we could get power from rubbing two sticks together we would..or was that to make fires..?

In any case..I have an air403 (before I found out about "the otherpower group") up on
top of my beam that is on top of my tower at 47 feet. I have hf rigs and 2 meter rigs that have never seen commercial power.

The combination of re power and ham radio is pretty powerful..and versatile with all the repeaters that exist today. so, yes, ham radio could be included in this group discussion..and should be..

I've always wondered about the various uses for an autopatch.  Does ordering pizza violate the FCC rules prohibiting using amateur bands for business purposes?

If you're hungry enough maybe it constitutes an emergency?

"Autopatch"
Haven't heard that word in  many a moons.
'Pizza by repeater'
Everyone..."with out a doubt"   knows in their heart that  Pizza can supply any ham...  the needed substance to man their radio stations..
ready ..   and able...   fist like no other....
heck...   I'm thinking I once heard that the fcc gives ya a 10% off cupon anytime one makes use of one of the dwindling (sp?) Free radio bands to support the cause!
