Hello Pickster,
Eh mate have you looked at the RF-30 range of mill-drills, although they're not a bridgeport they are fine for doing hobby work and don't cost the earth to but new. The price over here in Oz is around $1,300 new but I wouldn't reccommend you buy a secondhand one as you'll just be buying someone else's problems. As most bridgeports come with a R-8 taper you would need to buy a heap of tooling just to use it where the RF-30 usually come with a No.3 morse taper and the arbors are simple to turn up in a lathe.

Hope this helps

Cheers Bryan

Hi Pic.
Have not got an e-mail lately, did you get mine the other day? I would call but most the time I am not home durring decent hours. I'm sure you don't want 2am or 3am calls :)

I'm still planning the trip, but like the summer, having a hard time getting things lined out here so I can leave. Once gone I don't care alot about comming back any certain time, just can't get out to begin with!

So if I happen to come up by truck (bought a 4X4 recently) would we have a place to setup my Lathe/mill combo. Weighs about 600lbs but not too awefull large. Not sure if I would bring it, think any problem at the border getting it across? Last time they asked me what all the tools were for, remember that little black box Craftsman tool set.

Send me an e-mail, I'll send you another too, perhaps we lost one somewhere?
Send me BOB's number please, I had it but lost it recently.
.
nothing to lose

Spelin and tpying are my strong points, not electronics.

Pickster:

Have a look at the TRIAD.

You should be able to find one at any news stand or convenience store.

Ted.

Hiya Pickster,
I'm glad I've pointed you in the right direction for a mill drill. Now there as a few varients of this machine around and the price of the new mills should give you a guide to quality. But as a rule when ever I get a machine made in asia I always strip it completly as I've always come across casting sand left in the internals which if left there would ruin the bearings and slides in a short time. As I have over 40 years of the Model Engineering magazine I'll be happy to scan some of the projects in them and send them over to you if you like. I do believe what goes around comes around.

Cheers Bryan :)
