A Bit more data on my 17' machine

It's been about a week now and I got my anemometer fixed!

Click Here to see a somewhat detailed page about the construction of this wind turbine on otherpower.com.

The last couple days have been gusty and it's been fun to watch the wind turbine.  I got my anemometer fixed this morning and spent a while watching things.. trying to get an idea.  It's tricky, especially on gusty days like today.  My 'data aquisition' methods are very primitive...  the anemometer jumps up and down rapidly - one moment is says 8 the next it says 20 (within 1 second) and the ammeter jumps around too - but more slowly because there's a lot of momentum in the rotor, it takes time to speed up or slow down, and lots of these gusts that show up are 'momentary'.  So, I believe this 'skews' the readings in lower windspeeds to be optimistic, and higher windspeeds to be pessimistic.  I took a few hundred 'samples' (Dont laugh) by closing my eyes, and then opening them and instantly reading both current and windspeed and writing it down.  Most of these readings were at windspeeds between 9 and 20 mph.  I took about two hundred readings this way - and then averaged the numbers at all winspeeds between 5 and 20 (anything above that was pretty rare and I only got a couple samples, most of it wasnt realistic at all).  Average windspeed (According to the anemometer) during the period of my sampling was 14.2mph.

Itll be fun to get better data on less gusty days.
Here's what i came up with though.  Obviously the lower windspeeds are very optimistic, and the higher ones I believe are skewed in the other direction.

  1. mph  - 125 watts
  2. mph - 175 watts
  3. mph 140 watts
  4. mph 225 watts
  5. mph 285 watts
  6. mph 515watts
  7. mph 558 watts
  8. mph 765 watts
  9. mph 680 watts
  10. mph 825 watts
  11. mph 1180 watts
  12. mph 865 watts
  13. mph 500 watts
  14. mph 1527 watts
  15. mph 1430 watts
The peak windspeed I recorded today was 43 mph and I saw about 3000 watts, although I have seen a bit more in a bit less wind before.  The machine seems to start furling right around 1500 Watts.  Last night (no anemometer) I saw over 3000 watts several times and right at 4KW once, but I was only watching for about half an hour.  I do believe it's stalling a bit - but not too badly.  I think it's doing quite well in low winds though - I think Ill know more after watching things on calmer days, but I have a feeling it's good for around 400 watts in 10mph winds which is what I was hoping for - to be honest, if it 'furled' at 10 mph and never made more than 400 - 500 watts I'd be quite happy and have more power than I need.  Over the course of the week, I've been working over the rest of my system, removing old - and installing new solar panels.  I'm getting about  600 watts of solar into the batteries now.  Between that.. and this new turbine - I'm having trouble dumping enough power!  Lots of fun...

Man, the problem of not being able to dump enough power must be a good thing. Right now, I would be happy to have a fraction of what I use. With a turbine like that I'm sure I could. :)

Very nice genny Dan. Keep up the good work, and I look forward to your next project.

Great work Dan, you sure know how to keep the rest of us excited about bigger and better. Do you have any idea what temp. your coils are getting with 3 or 4KW output on this Genie

No idea!
although I dont see sustained outputs of 3 - 4 KW from this... it wont sit there for long.  I do see fairly sustained 2KW from it though... hard to guess.
It worries me a little that the hub for the blades completely blocks most airflow to the alternator.  Time will tell...

Wow, fantastic numbers.  DanB, would you email me directly at
big_boy_toddy [atsign] yahoo.com, I'd like to schedule a time
during spring break early March to come up for 2 days and 1 night
to build the genny.  Thanks.  Todd

Pretty impressive Dan!  I could use something like that in the summer but I would have to have it furling at 10mph... I suppose I could find other ways to use the power but that means more projects... My little puke ( 6.5ft compared to your 17ft) makes more than I need right now. Its been running 400-600 watts all day.  Back room is nice and toasty from the dump.  You must be getting some stormy winds there... its been 15 to 20 mph here pretty continuous and raining like crazy... February?  go figure... must be those SUV's.

Anyway, Great work!  I like it!

Dan,
It appears you accomplished your goal of extracting as much power as you could get at low wind speeds.  I dont have anything near this big, but its nice watching these things gently cranking away below 10 mph and putting out some decient power.  Im almost afraid to let anything much bigger than 6 ft diameter run at wind speeds greater than 20 mph, so I set my furling pretty low.  As you know , along the front range in Colorado, if the wind gets much higher than 15 to 20 mph then the situation is such that your likely to have really high gusts.  Maybe I lose some big time watts spilling that higher wind, but its easier on my nervous system - and the mill.
Nice job
John

Wow, truly impressive. You're an inspiration.
