A guy i ran into today said that

does anyone know of any legal restrictions to putting up your own wind and solar system?.(any country).any rules or stupid laws?....i have heard some reasonable restrictions and some unreasonable...i would be interested in hearing about them...for instance it might not be legal because if there were a fire, the fire dept. could get electricuted from putting out the fire(good point).they need to know how to shut it off in case of emergency.(good point)....windmills are an eyesore(bad point)...any more pro's or con's?..........pickster

tecker --

That was my thought too. You can make all the white lightning you want... Just can't sell it to the power grid.  :}

There are stupid laws aplenty. My philosophy is that on my property what I do, as long as I am not endangering some one ( and I'll leave it to you to decide what that might be in your case, and how to address it) is my business, and no one elses.

Yeah, but the b****s have airplanes, and you can't hide a windmill.  If nothing else they're eventually going to put a property tax on it.

Every county, city privince state etc is different. My fillosophy is make the brew and tell no officials nothing. What they don't know won't hurt them.
Windmills??? I only know that Dept of transport requires a permit and navigation lights if it is within so many miles from an airport, but only if it is more than 60 feet in height. But you can get a waiver even for that.( but not right on the end of a runway. I required a permit for garage. They found out I had one and taxed it. Permit for plumbing, ??? It wasn't plumbed before.??????????????. Electrical OhYeah but the value oif the parts were only 50.00???????
Remember I am stupid. You are smart enough to work for the government. I didn't know!!!!
You get the picture yet????

When I first went legit' for solar, with inventory and bussiness licenses, I decided to use "Proper" wire.  Found out what it was supposed to be here.  Looked for it for months.

The Big 3 wire manufacturers. 1 will not make it, 1 will make it just for me if I buy a bazzillion feet, and 1 had only 70' in a warehouse on the other side of the country.  Evidently most PVs with the same code as me are not using 'Proper' wire.

The Unreasonable part... I can run 30 amps of 240Vac in NM-UF-B.  I can bury it, string it pole to pole, staple it to the outside of the house, or any combination.

I can NOT run half an amp at 14VDC from a 8 watt solar panel through it!  It's not good enough for that!  What was I thinking!

Can't you exceede 200 gallons if you intend to burn it in the motor/alternator? :p

Also, The Fire Dept will MAKE you REMOVE any non-approved fire alarm.
Not just disconnect, but totaly REMOVE.
I'm not talking about little round battery powered smoke alarms.
My customers have almost no choice but a solar powered homebrew, cost wise.

The fire dept figures no alarm at all is better than a non-approved unit.

Soldiers a-tenHUT!!

  :D

Now we are talking in my terms again.

Here hydroquebec just passed laws (yeah, a company passing laws....) to require special inspections, etc..

IMO, as pioneers in the field; we have a few responsiblities. Our first one is safety. The reason being simply; PR!!

If Joe gets hurt because of Jacks windmill or wiring; then maybe Bob will get hauled to court when he erects his next door to Joe.

 Next is environmental.

If Jack dumps batteries in the bush or swamp... WTF was the point of going A.E./R.E.?! And how long before battery permits will be in place..?

 Then finally, FREE POWER! :D

We all know its not exactly free, but what the heck. If Jack shows up on Bobs doorstep looking for a cup of KW; then R&D costs globally will never get off the ground.

So; in my eyes all systems need to be designed with those things in mind.

  Safety, friendly and practicle.

I wouldnt even think about installing a system that could present safety issues, wouldnt deal with a battery dumper and definitly wouldnt want to be associated with a 5,000$ +++ system that doesnt do its job. My worst nightmare... lol

I do have standards after all. :D

As I said " there are stupid laws a plenty", government ( and hydro Canada) ARE not your friends, government is only interested in expanding it power and influence, regardless of what they say about "protecting people". The phrase I truly despise is "it's for the Children", no it's for those little gray men in gray suits who sit in little gray offices in big gray buildings.
