This is a small 4 - 1/2" diameter gen, utilizing ceramic magnets from a hardware store -- It was built last winter, out of pure boredom and curiousity and dug out of it,s hiding place to share, with all, what can be done at low cost !!
This never was a serious project, just something to do durring a cold and rainy couple of days !
The "drum", is a piece of 4" pipe , with a disc welded to it, a 1/2" bolt and all trued in the lathe -- While the 12 ceramic magnets are 7/8 X 1-7/8 X 3/8 at about $1.89 for two, at the local hardware store..
The coil assembly, is from a PM type alternator, used on many small Kabota engines , used in mowers and tractors -- something someone gave me, and is unmodified..

This is the PMA, on the lathe ,driven at625 RPM -- producing 8.06 volts..

Here at 855 RPM , we see 11.62 volts -- not bad, but I hoped for over 13, at lower RPM , and as it was moveing around in the lathe, due to the jury rig I had it held in there with -- I thought it wise to quit there !!

Here are the components, showing the magnet drum , coil assy and the Dump load controller, I built, thanks to Hugh Piggot,s free schematics -- it even works, and if I can build it, Anyone can..

Another view of the components and the three mounting holes, for a future prop, if I ever get back to it...

And, a picture of my Hornet mill, highly modified but seldom ever turns because of those trees seen in the background --- This was also an experiment, before moveing it to my cabin --- it really works there !!
I hope you enjoy this and it inspires you to build something, and share it with us all --Bill H.. |
