How cold could well water possibly be?

By Norm, Section Remote Living

Cold enough to help air conditioning and refrigeration?

I remember that in the summer time we could pump water
from our well into an aluminum pitcher and get condensation
 on the outside...
I never thought to see how cold that actually
was...anybody know from experience?

Where? (3.00 / 0) (#1)
by wdyasq on Sat Jun 04, 2005 at 10:19:45 PM MST

Well water temperature depends on location.  In Texas it can vary from low 70's to mid 60's for "normal" well water.  Hotsprings can go to well over 100F.

In mid Ohio, it was 57F. Others have told me of 45F water further north.

Here at 47 degrees north by Lake Superior the deep well water temperature is 48 degrees F.

Good question, I have never measured my well water here in Tn, though I know that it's cool enough to provide relief from work induced sweat.........
BTW such systems are refered to as "chill water" at least when I was in the Navy.

Oh you were in the Navy also? '51 thru '54 for me
Engineman 3/c.
The water I was referring to was back in Illinois
near St.Louis, Mo
Right now the water in the toilet tank is cold
enough that there is condensation on the outside
temperature of that water seems to be about 56
degrees farenheidt.
So if your evaporation coils were immersed in this chill water (pumped and circulated with an
old fashioned windmill) it would help to cut cost.

41oF here in Northern Minnesota.

Of course, that's after clearing the pressure tank and sampling stuff straight out of the tap....

Hi Mate,
I have a great interest in the concept of "free cooling" (its research led me to this group). I am interested in using either subsurface water or underground pipe fields.

I have bored down 3 metres into the clay subsoil at my home here near Sydney (similar latitude to Los Angeles) and have a pretty constant 18 to 19C (ummmm...thats...ummmm 64 degrees in the old money)

When you consider a normal sensible comfort target for aircon is 23C (73 degrees) there's enough leeway for some heat exchanger inefficiencies. This with no need for energy guzzling het pumps.

Insensible targets..ie rel humidity of 50% can easily be acheived by desiccant wheels with solar regeneration.

Anybody else worked on this? I'd love to pool my research.

Within a degree or two, check with your local weather forcaster about the annual air temperature at the location in question.  This will be your water temperature.  The only exception to this would be some other influence such as a hot spring, etc.  Plain and simple; the subterrain temperature is the average air temperature of that area.

Yeah that sounds cool enough to help cool a
refrigerator...or air conditioner
How hot is it over there today?
86 degrees...48%humidity 16mph wind in NE Ohio.
water about 57 degrees.tap water that is...

Hi Norm
I am in west central louisiana.
water in my 100 ft. well is 55% F.

It gets rather warm here, 95 degrees and 75%
humidity in summertime.[sometimes worse]

We lower electric usage for AC by spraying well
water on the condenser coil's of AC unit.

 Parts list.
electric solinoid valve
mist sprayer [a type of sprinkler]
inline water pressure regulator.

Parts can be found at any greenhouse supply outlet.

Wire solinoid valve into compresser wiring, when the compressor comes on water will spray on the condensor coils.
will reduce electric usage by about 50%.

cooling evaporator coils with well water (3.00 / 0) (#13)
by Norm on Tue Jun 07, 2005 at 07:36:20 AM MST

Hi Elvin
That's what I was trying to emphasize cooling
the condenser coils...so the unit can operate
more efficiently 50% reduction in electric?
Makes a lot of sense....instead of trying to
figure how to make twice as much electricity ...
figure how to make it work twice as good.
Yesterday at 86 degrees and 48% humidity was
enough to suit me.
Wonder how many people here do what you have been doing? Thanks for the comment Elvin !
