19M amps, and a Big Magnet

Interesting...

LAS VEGAS(AP) Scientists at the Nevada Test Site said they generated a current Wednesday equal to roughly four times all the electrical power on Earth.

The current, which created pressures in materials millions of times greater than normal, was part of an experiment to better understand nuclear weapons.

The experiment was conducted at the test site's Atlas Pulsed Power Facility by scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, along with staff from the test site and contractor Bechtel Nevada.

During the few millionths of a second that it operated, the 650-ton Atlas pulsed-power generator discharged nearly 19 million amps of current through an aluminum cylindrical shell about the size of a tuna can, the National Nuclear Security Administration said.

Atlas, which works as a giant power multiplier, was designed as part of an Energy Department program to determine the readiness of the nation's nuclear stockpile without underground testing.

It was built at Los Alamos and recently moved to the Nevada Test Site, a proving ground just north of Las Vegas.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.(AP) This definitely ain't no refrigerator magnet. The new super magnet at The National High Magnetic Field Laboratory weighs more than 15 tons and has a magnetic field 420,000 times that of the Earth's...

The $16 million magnet also...

Might be entertaining to add a "nuclear" area to the otherpower forums.  We could all think up imaginary home brew nuclear power stations that we are working on in our back yards.  Just to see the look on the Fed's faces when they show up and can't find anything but wind machines.  Sorry, I'm always easily amused by ways to screw with "the man".

How about calling your PV generated electricity, "Power from a Themo-Nuclear Generator"?
After all, that is what the Sun is.

It would just end up being another Farnsworth Fusor board.  Enough of those already.  (The answer is out there...  B-) )

Well that's easy to get their attention. Use keywords.

Like vanilla cake - it's yellowcake, right?

What about flour in bread? It's bleached and enriched.

What's one element that can have an atomic weight of 238? Uranium.

What's a family called consisting of just you and your parents and siblings? Nuclear family.

What can you say about something that's really awesome? It's da bomb.

What are the driver packs from nVidia called? Detonators.

There, it's like THX - The Audience is listening.
Eschelon is listening. Hehe.

Hmm, how many turns and what size wire for a 48 volt machine?  While we are at it, what size air gap.  One turn would probably get you too much voltage. :(  But think of what you could power. :) Of course you'd have to get a really tall tower and the jet stream to cooperate in order to spin the props of the yet to be invented lightweight super strong material you would need to build them from.  On the other hand, a levitation experiment with a diamagnetic block might be really simple provided you could fire up the magnet for more than a few femtoseconds.  Rich

When will forcefield start carrying this magnet?  Anyone know where you could pick up a few million surplus batteries?  What if we ran three tuna cans for better efficientcy?

I wonder if they can use this technology to assist with creating a self-sustaining fusion reaction. Efficient fusion power generators would, in a way, be a very good thing. I do worry that we'll all become power gluttons again. I'm one that likes to conserve things, even when they are plentiful.

You better have a special place for the wind turbine driving those magnets... If its close to home you'll wake up in the morning with a loud clatter in the turbine only to find out all your neighbors cars are stuck to the magnet disc.... maybe we can order the 1/4 size....

Question:  Did the can explode?  If not, why not?  That kind of current should have vaporised it.

oh, you can bet that it exploded. <G>
that's the whole point-- while the outer part of the 'can' is expanding away from its original position, some of the internal material is actually 'imploding'. the resulting pressure gradient in the plasma and its interaction with the magnetic field generated by that huge current then leads to the big pressures that they're claiming. . . . and for a few attoseconds, life gets really interesting for atoms in the center of this machine.

that's why the NTS exists. it provides a place for people to fiddle with things that go 'bang' without annoying the nieghbors.

further I will not speculate. . . <G>
