multi layer magnet backing

will multiple layers of  20 gauge form a proper magnetic circuit.

i'm thinking of methods i could use in a large dia. genni to form the steel backing and provide a magnetic circuit other than a 1/4"plate or even a steel ring. i know if i stack sheet steel beneath the mag eventualy it becomes non magnetic, but i have no idea if its producing a circuit or simply disipating the flux.

I don't know either for sure but study implies extra backing
allows more magnetic flux return path/circuit. Mu type alloy metal is
available in cheap to free kits from manf'rs, so might do a search
for this. This stuff grabs hold of flux greatly but can saturate
easier than steel so was thinking of layering for more compactness
yet same or better flux return.

these are mysteries a gauss meter would clear up in a hurry !
