Phishing schemes

So much for the smart consumer

I found this article and thought of some here:

http://tinyurl.com/yaohft

I have clicked on those links (but NEVER on a windoze machine) and they are good. It amazed me that some fall for these and the Nigerian scam. I get a few of the 'Bill Gates is going to send you a fist-full of money if you forward this email'. I've always wondered how he got rich and now I know, giving money away to fools.

Well, be cautious and careful out there.

Ron

You mean I won't get that foreign $$$ deposited into my account number even though they seemed honest to me?
But they were so sincere in the explanation of just how rich I could be---I could retire early, etc.
And you are saying that might possibly be a scam?
Oh--my!
Yeah, and you are right--there's idjuts that do fall for those and a dozen others as well.
The old redirect from your Credit Card/Bank. Just enter your numbers to access and "correct" their bookeeping error (probably an error on their part--even they "admit" that)
Or the old Paypal error (again probably bookkeeping) but if ya don't--they are going to SUSPEND (they always use caps there) your Paypal account in 10/3/4/various days without PROMPT attention from you.
There's even a ton of Ebay "fishin"/phishing/pissin exploits running around.
They actually are an exploit--not a software/OS exploit--just a simple mind exploit or the best one--GREED.

I like to send Ebay the ones I get--or even Paypal--I send the originator's IP along with it although it takes a bit of digging to get who the place where ya enter the numbers actually is...I send that too. I "boldly" go to those places and enter in some crud for name/pass/number etc and even possibly a few objectionable words..It's funny.
But that's like sticking your finger in the hole in the dyke when about 1/4 mile of it washed out.
And if they didn't work--they wouldn't exist.

Every once in a while I get an E-mail claiming there is an invoice out there that I owe money on.  I never open them, but I wonder how many busy people fall pry to this sort of vague claim.  Aside from the fact that I don't recognize the names, my attitude is simply that if you think I owe you money you can send me a letter and we'll go from there.  Of course, they don't know my address which is **.

I forward those types of emails to ebay and paypal.

to forward them to ebay use: spoof@ebay.com

same for paypal: spoof@paypal.com

I usually get replies within a day saying that yes the email was a fraud and thanks for letting us know.

I always like how the link to the information site still goes to either ebay or paypal.

but the link that goes to the site where your supposed to login goes to http://ip address/jhdbdyen/dnfdd/ssewhe

most people don't know to look at the link itself before you click on it. It took my 3 months to get it through to my wife how to look at the link before clicking on it.

Nigeria has gotten such a bad reputation regarding scammers that someone put together the attached spoof website

http://www.universityofnigeria.com/courses.htm

I also like the one below where they scam the scammers (scroll down on the site to see examples)

That University site is hillarious.  There is always someone ready to try and take your money.

Working definition of a contractor:  Person whose job it is to separate you from as much of your money as possible, and do as little as possible to accomplish that task.

While that is not true of all people, that is how I have to look at a lot of the new people I have to work for me.  Many are looking for a quick buck, whether on line or in person.  Rich

A head's up:

The Nigerians read this forum too. I've been asked on more than one occasion to sell them my PV panel (all 10W of it...) and to name my price. That panel was never up for sale, BTW, I asked for advice on it in this forum...

I have had a couple that want to purchase 1000 watts worth of solar panels. They ask for FedEx shipping to an apartment. I told them that I can only ship that many by truck and they can pick it up at the terminal. One of them agreed and sent 3 stolen credit card numbers to pay. I never heard from him again when I wrote to tell him his cards didn't work.

I regularly write back to these people, and have made somewhat of a hobby of it. I have an email address dedicated for the purpose, and I 'win' around five lottery prizes a week, get offers to buy Gold dust, and countless "dead bank client" letters.

A few of my efforts are here.

But I'm finding it increasingly difficult to keep the cynicism out of my initial reply these days.
